pShenk Posted September 5, 2006 Share Posted September 5, 2006 Hey all, I had an idea as I was puttering around in the garage this weekend. I've been vaguely discontent with how "my" half of the garage is set up, and have been thinking about better ways to turn it into a real moto-friendly workshop. I started wondering how other people set up their space, if indeed they are lucky enough to have a dedicated space. Do you use bins for parts? How do you set them up? Do you have a dedicated workbench? A lift? How do you store your tools? My "shop" is half of a two-car garage in a town home. I'm lucky to at least have half the garage, but it's also taken up with a lot of misc stuff that is just stored there. I also have a lot of woodworking equipment, that I'm not using very much, if at all, right now. I've been thinking of putting that stuff somewhere less accessible, but at least out of the way. 99% of the time I'm either getting something out of the rolling tool chest, or out of the wooden cabinet where I keep bolts, bins for electrical stuff, cleaners, solvents, etc. Everything else is pretty much in the way. I'll post pics here, in hopes of both getting some tips, but also maybe others will be inspired to post pics of their own workspaces. stormsedge Posted September 5, 2006 Share Posted September 5, 2006 Sadly mine looks like Martin's, only bigger as original tenant was reportedly a 1938 Plymouth. I pushed Guzzi and the rest of my stuff to the rear of garage, placing implements of lawn destruction (some call it "lawn care", but not the way my helpers do it) at rollup door for use during this excursion. I have BIG plans of knocking down two of four walls and expanding it someday...but currently lack the financial means to make that little dream come true. k Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

belfastguzzi Posted September 5, 2006 Share Posted September 5, 2006 I was going to say that if there is one thing that makes me envious, in so many of the photos that the Americans post, it is the grand spaciousness of their garages. They often look like second houses, for motorbikes and cars. – And then what does Staedler do? He goes and posts a picture of his garage and it looks just like a whole house! Brilliant. Living in a big country certainly has a bundle of advantages. I've always dreamt of being able to buy the house next door, just to turn it into a garage and workshops. Of course, you hardly dare have a garage over here these days. Rates are being based on house value (including size, view etc) and so anything that you do to improve the value of your property means that you have to pay more rates. And there is no cap on the amount payable. I can just about shove one bike in the garage/shed and lean it over to work on it. Sorry, no help on the organisational front here either. BTW, you DO have AC in that shed don't you? I can't imagine working in a metal shed in the middle of Texas. I agree with Belfastguzzi, that us Americans probably are spoiled. Hell, I FEEL spoiled after seeing the other pics. I think what I need to do is cover the walls with shelves and stop moaning about it. It's really cool seeing everyone's shop though. staedtler Posted September 6, 2006 Share Posted September 6, 2006 well,... the site was an empy lot, the area where i'm at is the old part of town, skidrow right south of the downtown, the oldest neighborhood in San Antonio, dating to the 1800's... not a very safe place, but land is cheap....not much people venture down here... the area is a mix of older industrial parks warehouses and the like, just across the river is the abandoned lone star brewery! because this old houses in the hood doesn't have garages, nor room for them i was forced to build one... (it's actually two) you lease one and put your stuff in the other, it pays itself! actually i'm leasing both, the one with my stuff in it is occupied with another guy who has a 748,.... he lives there, the place has a loft, full bath, kitchen, central air....blah blah, also a good friend of his, is a duc mechanic...the guy takes care of the bikes, so it works out great. at the time there's the Guzzi a 748 (sometimes two), an rs250 and sometimes a K1200s.... it's also a great place to stage out rides, everyone can bring their bike, spend the night and take off early without having to coordinate places to meet...
