  1. I do believe that Texas (myself, P6x, PressureAngle) just had one of these precious Spine Raids following the illustrious long standing Tennesse one and the recent California (Scud & LaGrasta) one.  So that leaves several other states and countries that can now follow suit!

Post 'em up!  Imagine if we had a National Spine Raid somewhere!

Thanks to everybody on this thread who offered thoughtful troubleshooting suggestions. I really appreciate all of the time and effort many of you have put in trying to help me out.

Sounds like a happy ending after all.  Great news.

My Ducati 1000ss DS, 1000cc air cooled fuel injected engine with about the same specific output of a Norge, recommended oil 10W-40. My Guzzi 1100 2 valve same as Norge engine basically ran for 10 years on M1 0W-40.

Not many road engines are going to "blow up" because of the oil you use or the grade. But when you pull it down for a rebuild it can make the difference between whether or not you have a simple and cost effective re ring and new big end shells and valve guides or the total every wear part needs to be replaced and it's a part out job now expense wise.

Then there is giving away performance and fuel economy aspect. Me, I just like to run what I know myself is the best oil for my specific needs and eliminate the corporate "less than ideal but cover all bases" approach no matter how obscure and ridiculous.

Thanks Phil...very good and educational explanation...I'll try experimenting at the next oil changes on the Norge/Griso/Scura with a viscosity spread of 30...if I can perceive any improvement in performance, "feeling" and / or mileage that would be a bonus.

  4. For the fools, including myself, who follow the owner's manual, but occasionally check for updates out there, and I include looking at cars as well, not just motorcycles.

So far at 60K miles of use, the Norge hasn't blown up yet due to improper oil usage!

Based on official documentation and owner discussions, Moto Guzzi has not changed the oil recommendation for the 2008 Norge. The manufacturer's specification has remained a high-quality 10W-60 synthetic motor oil.
    The original recommendation
At launch, the official factory recommendation for the Norge was Agip 4T full synthetic 10W-60 oil. The reasons for this specific viscosity include:
    • Air/oil-cooled engine: The air-cooled V-twin engines run hotter than liquid-cooled counterparts, and the 10W-60 weight helps the oil maintain its viscosity under high thermal stress.
    • Higher film strength: The engine has specific characteristics, such as a dry clutch, that necessitate a high film strength oil for longevity.
    Updated guidance
While the fundamental recommendation has not changed, the brand of oil has. Since the original Agip oil is now more difficult to find, Moto Guzzi recommends the equivalent Castrol Edge 10W-60 synthetic for its modern big-block engines.
    Considerations for older models
Some owners of older Norge models have noticed changes in oil API (American Petroleum Institute) ratings over time. Specifically, some older formulations of Agip oil had a more desirable SG rating. Because newer formulations may have different ratings, many owners prioritize finding a quality 10W-60 synthetic oil with a higher concentration of zinc and phosphorus to protect the valve train. However, the 10W-60 viscosity remains the most critical specification.

  5. Marfa, Ft. Davis, all nice riding...lots of curves, and a stop at the observatory is an interesting one!

I gather from your route then that you are starting from the East and working your way west.  I anticipate being in Atlanta Thursday next week, after picking up stops south of Dallas and then in Dallas area/Greenville, ending up in Atlanta.

    Enjoy the riding!

  6. Has anyone just ran flat 30W oil for an oil change in a CARC bike and noticed any difference in performance?

In the garage for the various cars, I have a collection of Advanced Full synthetic Mobil 1 10W-30, 20W-50, 10W-40, 0W-40 and of course 10W-60, all full synthetics.  I'll try some experiments on using them in the Norge over time and see how the bike feels/behaves.  Good to know there are these options available

  7. Aha…next week I’ll be picking up Tour stops in Dallas and Greenville and Atlanta…then up the scenic way thru Arkansas to Missouri and Kansas.  Time permitting I may get a few of the extended Republic of Texas Tour as well and then some more standard stops on the way back!

Ojinaga to El Paso…doesn’t look it goes all the way.  I’ve only gone the other way to Lajitas along the River road.

  8. What is the life expectancy of the viscosity modifiers under normal, not arduous use?  Does one really need to be concerned about that when using 10W-60...I've never given it a thought on my 2008 Norge bought new, with almost 60K miles and still not consuming a drop of oil between oil changes.

Here's some key points about engine oil.

Always use a "full synthetic" oil.

The lower the "W" number the better. People that say a "0" weight oil is too thin don't know shit about oil.

Try to keep the viscosity spread to 30 units or less if possible.

    Change it regularly

Don't allow your engine to do short runs that don't let the engine oil spend some decent time at operating temp.

Zink in a flat tappet engine? 900PPM to 1400 PPM is where you need to be. Too much is not good as is too little.

    Phil

Intriguing:  10W-60 full synthetic is the recommended oil for the Norge and Griso...are you suggesting that be 0W-30, 10W-40 or 20W-50 instead?

    1) 13v

Light is off at 1,2,and 3

Light only comes on when revved to 3-4K RPM

Having read thru the the last couple of pages that were written in the last few hours.

12.3 while running is too low, do you have a comparison to what it was running at before changing the regulator?

Now, the light coming on at revs, suggests possibly that the lamp is vibrating in its holder and making some light contact.  Have you actually taken the dash apart (carefully) to look at the lights as well and see if they are seated properly?

I just tested my Scura...13.3 at idle, 14.5 at revs...a few years ago, if my memory serves me correctly, Chuck had advised me to upgrade the wire on the voltage regulator and to use a star washer there where it grounds as well for better contact.  Have you checked the grounding of the regulator?

What a nice Coppa!  Now that I see that people are not frowned on for trailering, maybe I'll do the same next year, in as much as I enjoy riding long distances, the Scura has no bags for required gear other than a rear tail bag...ideas, ideas!

With a few more measurements, I could send that up for quotes to the same supplier making the Roper Plates. I may just do that when I get around to sniffing the butt of this zombie bike.

I would be interested in a tail tidy if you are going to pursue that.

  13. I visited Mandello in 2013 during Xmas time, unfortunately it was closed at the time, but still a very nice visit to Mandello and surrounding areas.  It's time for a return trip hopefully next year.  Nice that they have modernized and kept a connection to history as well.  Some of the design looks like the back end of the Griso exhaust pipe.

Now...if I could arrange a ride on the original Norge....I would be happy!

Taking Guzzi out of Mandello would be like taking BMW out of Munich or Porsche out of Stuttgart (aside from its temporary home in Gmund, Austria during the war)...besides this area of Italy is just beautiful...why move it anywhere else?

  14. Enjoying Wisconsin for a week visiting family…next weekend is the Guzzi rally in Wonewoc…and a chance to ride some Rustic roads and parts of the Great River road along the Mississippi in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa.

I’m on the Griso this week…hope to see some V11’s perhaps at the rally and maybe some of the newer models too!
