Melissa Holbrook Pearson rode a Guzzi. I enjoyed her book.

    Purchased. Thanks.

I did not get it for the Guzzi brand, but she attempts to explain why we enjoy riding motorcycles, and the effect it has on us.

I know what it does to me, but I don't know why it did it, and why only a few of us get the virus.

A lot of the people I know here, don't think I am sane. Riding a motorbike at this time of my life, and especially in this "difficult" environment. So let us see if she is able to explain to me why.

Recalling just a few lady riders coming through our local "sport-touring" community reminds that the more talented ones chose bikes that fit them well (shouldn't we all?).

If I was to ride a bike that fitted me well, I would not be here. :P

I ride a Moto Guzzi V11 Le Mans because this is the one I wanted, not the one I settled for.

When I think of riding motorcyles, I think of special people, passion, devotion, affinity. Such as those who become Doctors because they want to do Doctors without borders type of life.

I think most girls would find the V11 Sport way too heavy for them to manhandle around off the bike and carpark type riding. Mine seems to get heavier every year. Magazine images always look cool but the reality of riding a heavy bike with a fairly high seat height and C of G is another matter. I've known quite a few female riders and racers and I've never seen one of them that looks totally 100% safe on a large capacity sports bike at walking speeds.

    Ciao

I found the hard way how heavy my Le Mans really is after dropping it and being unable to put it upright by myself.

The seat height is a big factor, and not only for ladies.

Sadly, not a lot of ladies ride, from what I can see. Girls who ride are awesome. Girls who ride something like a Guzzi, Ducati, or Triumph, these are unicorns.

I don't do group rides because they are always a sausage fest. That, and the people who love to destroy their bikes and make the group look like a bunch of jackwagons by "stunting".

I am a lonesome rider too.

I used to ride with a few friends, always the same, following the races around Europe in the 70's. We rode safely.

My wife is a Guzzi owner, but she isn't registered on this or any other motorcycle forum.

Her V11 is really why I am here, I own Guzzi's but she is the only V11 owner in the family.

There are probably more female riders now than I can recall ever seeing. But female riders are still the exception and not the norm. Even a few racing.

I would be interested to know why she picked Guzzi? it is kind of an obscure brand outside of those who are really interested. Not that anybody can be affiliated with anything, matter of personal choice obviously. But if you say candidly you ride an Italian motorcycle, people will think Ducati.

But was she a motorcycle enthusiast before, or did that happen with you?

    There were a few track racer ladies. Including a Spanish that used to do Moto2 María Herrera, and here in the USA I only know of Elena Myers;

I had to look up TSE lenses.  Didn't know about them.  Apparently the lens can be angled on the camera body which creates different focal lengths from widest to the narrowest angle to the sensor?  So, that can accentuate or control the depth of field in the photo.

I'm not sure I got that right but that's my rudimentary understanding.

Are you a professional taking photos for ads?

I am not a professional, but I always liked photography. It started a long time ago, so I did photo with a film camera and moved with the technology.

I so far refused to use a phone, because I feel it denatures the purpose. Photography has now become a thoughtless process.

    I don't do selfies either.

TS-E lenses are fascinating, and they can be used for anything as a standard prime one.

There are a few domains where they excel at; you understood it correctly! if you look at the 6th photo from the top in my thread, you can tell I used this principle to have only the front row in focus.

It is very useful in architecture too, as you get the perspective right.

There also is the miniaturization effect, and the ability to shoot from the side and make it look like it is straight. Like shooting yourself in front of mirror, but with the camera invisible:

    TS-E lens self shot example

The major draw back of these, they are bloody expensive (obviously), and manual focus only.

But once you start using them, you are usually hooked up.

I have two of the older ones. The 24mm and the 90mm.

When I get around it, I will make some Le Mans Tilt and Shift examples.

I also like Candid photography, the Robert Doisneau style. In today's world, people no longer want you to take pictures of them. However this Japanese lady was kind enough to let me. This was in Grom, NYC.

I don't carry big cameras to concerts.  I like to watch the show and not lug around a big camera.  Also don't want to bother other concertgoers.

But, I have a Lumix ZS100.  It's a little bigger than a cigarette pack.   With that little one inch sensor, the reach is full frame equivalent of 250mm.  It's got 20 odd megapixels but is a little hit and miss in the results.  It works OK in automode, not so much in the others (although I found some tweak settings on forum that helps).  The key is to have a ready exposure compensation control which I've programmed to the lens ring.  It's usually best to under expose those shots because the background is dark and subject is brightly lit, sometimes in the spot light.  Not only so you get the right exposure, it also shortens the shutter speed and reduces blur.

You're Fuji is a fixed lens APS-C?  Much bigger sensor for higher quality photos suited for more close up and portrait stuff.  It might be a challenge unless you have great seats.  The little Lumix is a good travel camera that I took for a month long trip to Europe.

OK, I'll look for any excuse to post photos and talk photography

    Awright!

I think we have to create a specific topic for those of us who are into photography.

I am into "Product Photography", and I love TS-E lenses. I use them everywhere I can.

  9. Worth a shot....

I am curious. My experience of ladies on two wheels is limited to Europe; and even then, the girls on motorbikes were never legions.

I have met a few riders here at a specialists in the heights in Houston. None on Moto Guzzi though.

Most of the others I have discussed with, are passengers because their companion is riding a bike. So, not by choice.

In July I was in Yellowstone and I met two (older) couples on Goldwings. Ladies piggyback only.

During my training here in Houston, we had one single lady with the rest of us. Only getting her license for professional purpose. Checking with the school, ladies interested in getting their motorbike's license are not frequent. Just a handful.

How is it in other states, your country? are there many (motorbike's riding) females joining your outings?

  10. I am aware of the option "follow thread" but I don't consider it useful for how I like to consume the forum's content.

    The "notification" helps.

Going to the root of the forum page and checking when was the posts updated works too.

What could be considered is to make "recent" with a scroll, so you can go back further than the five most recent posts; this would help me to pickup where I left off.

Or maybe there is another way to do it which I have not learned yet?

UPDATE: Still looking for a CLEAN/not-neglected V11 Sport/LeMans. I want a stock, solid machine that is turn-key. $6k cash for a NICE bike.

May have to just buy one and have it shipped.

    Thank you.

    Look at this one... https://www.moto.it/moto-usate/moto-guzzi/v11/v11-le-mans-2001-06/8442609

    The listing says:

The bike, as you can see in the pics is perfect. Almost like new. It has not been ridden for a few years now, always garaged and kept in maniacal conditions.

It needs a restart maintenance which has been estimated to 500/800 EUR by the dealer, which can be discounted from purchase price.

    23,000 kilometers... 2003....

You're right about the camera.  COTA has restrictions too.  Luckily my Tamron 70-300 (450 APS-c equiv), sneaks through when it folds down.  I suppose they think it's a portrait or short focal lens?

OTOH, the best vantage is the south bridge where the goons will run you out on Friday morning.  So I got about 5 minutes for the entire weekend to get my photos.  I have to confess, I really don't like the management team at COTA.

The removable lens madness has spread. The last time I was at the International Dallas Guitar Festival, they also made my life difficult because of my camera bag. I was only able to keep my Fujifilm X100.

Nowadays, anything that is not a phone is considered professional grade photography.

It's not the ticket prices, it's the rip off when you're there.  No food or drink allowed, no general seating on practice days, etc.   I'm used to Indy and road courses where you bring a picnic and cooler or even camp on the grounds.  Sorry but COTA sucks.  The track and racing is great and almost worth it.

When they take a 5 year old's PBJ when daddy took him from California to get there, well screw 'em.

So far as Austin, it's not the same since they closed the Armadillo.  I think I already posted that.

You did post about the Armadillo. I am partial to Antone's myself. Closed as well.

The Houston Rodeo and Live Stock show has similar restrictions about food or drinks. And since they search every bag at the entrance, they even remove water...

And I have also had some issues bringing my cameras at some venues. If you have removable lenses, you need to pay for a license. Even if non professional photographer. They judge you by the equipment.

You can only bring a fixed lens camera with you. No profit is too small nowadays....

At one SpineRaid one of the fellows was running guzzidiag on a hand held device (not sure which or what those are called). It was a nice set-up being so portable and not needing a desk or table nearby.

There is that guy who had a good idea; he designed TuneEcu to run on Android for about every bike available in the market, including some oldies. TuneEcu works with the same interface used for GuzziDiag; only the V11 is not specifically listed. I am trying to get in touch with the developer to see if he could had it.

Then a simple Android tablet would do the trick.

I have requested to join the TuneECU group on Facebook, to find out more.

Paul, I think; therefore, I am.  No way, I'd front those jackals at COTA a freaking dime.  If I decide to go, I'll pay when I get there.

Don't tell me you gave those guys your money already- other than your Texas tax dollars.

It is not only COTA; DORNA is also milking us profusely.

Austin has also gone mad.... I usually go to the SXSW each year, and I have seen how the prices have just increased exponentially. Madness...

Cogito ergo sum!  I love it!

I buy Moto GP tickets on the day I arrive...and just pick what's available then, been enough times to know where to hide out and find good spots!

I do still have my Stones tickets from buying them back in 2020, I just held on to them w/o requesting a refund thru Ticketmaster, so they roll to the upcoming show in November!

Luckily Texas doesn't have a state income tax...so they only get my sales tax dollars on the Black's BBQ in Lockhart!

You missed your chance to see Charlie Watts one last time though...

Looks like travel restrictions for US citizens will be coming to EU.  Boo.

Some countries have phone applications that produce a QR code verifying you have been vaccinated. You can produce it wherever it is required, if required.

Even if US permanent resident, I am able to get it by producing a valid passport, signed declaration and of course the vaccine certificate.

I don't understand why a US citizen would not be able to do the same!? the only information they should care for is the identity proof and the vaccination proof.

Unfortunately, each European country as its own system, and no sharing with others. To preserve confidentiality.

I believe the problem is that the Mac version of GuzziDiag is 32bit.  Catalina is the first version of OSX to cut 32bit support and only run 64bit programs.

I've got an old MacBook Pro running High Sierra that I keep around to run older programs with.  I've been successfully running GuzziDiag on that for a few years with no problems.  However, I've never been able to get GuzziDiag to run on my newer USB-C style MacBook Pro.

This is the issue with software. It always needs sustaining because operating systems and supports keep evolving.

I think I will get a cheap windows laptop just to install the MS version which seems to be the one the developer of GuzziDiag maintains. on Ebay there are some listings below the $100, with a bit of patience...

    100 ANNI DI STORIA

    IN MOSTRA A MANDELLO

    Sabato 11/9 e Domenica 12/9 negli orari 9:00 - 18:00.
Tutte le informazioni sulle modalità di accesso e prenotazione saranno disponibili tra qualche giorno su motoguzzi.com.

100 YEARS OF HISTORY ON SHOW IN MANDELLO The Moto Guzzi Museum in Mandello del Lario opens its doors to the first hundred years of history of the Eagle brand, founded in 1921. A century during which he has collected extraordinarily compelling and concrete testimonies: places, trophies, photographs and documents, but above all iconic motorcycles. Winning, revolutionary, unique models on display just a few meters from the production lines from which the new Moto Guzzi bikes still come out. Despite the stringent limitations related to the Covid-19 pandemic, the museum will be open from 9 to 12 September, with limited admissions and access by reservation only. Thursday 9/9 and Friday 10/9 from 2.30pm - 6.00pm. Saturday 11/9 and Sunday 12/9 from 9:00 to 18:00. All information on how to access and book will be available in a few days on motoguzzi.com.

As I anticipate that you will be one of the lucky ones to go there, it would be great if you could take some pics of the gathering.

Not necessarily the bikes of the Museum, but the crowd of people who share the interest in Moto Guzzi. This is (at least to me) the real treat. Meeting people and learning how they got there.

  20. Prior to purchasing the ECU Interface for the V11, I attempted to install GuzziDiag;

The current version is said to be vr 0.50. it matches for Windows, but does not for Mac OS X which is shown as 0.47. Is 0.47 the latest version for MacOS?

in the changelog, 0.50 was released (for windows) in 2020, while 0.47 was released in 2015.

The developer states the program runs on "High Sierra" 10.13 which was released by Apple in September 2017. I am running Catalina, 10.15 released October 2019. Catalina is still based on MacOS X, not MacOS XI.

    GuzziDiag_V0.47

I nevertheless installed the program on my MacBoo Pro.

When I attempt to launch the program from the application folder, I get that error message:

    GuzziDiag_V0.47 cannot be opened

    Question 1:

I have read the disclaimer the developer does not support MacOS, this application is mainly destined to Windows machines. Anybody here running successfully GuzziDiag on a Mac?

    Question 2:

Does anybody know if other program(s) exist(s) that could run on MacOS and still drive the FTDi FT232RL chip?

I checked "TuneEcu" and the program is now only running on Android.

There is nothing specific to the V11, but the developer may not have been accurate enough. Anyone running TuneECU?

    TuneECU bike list
