  1. Argh, I can tell I'm already not going to get a long with a lot of the ducatistas, *facepalm* can I just ask you guys for help? should have got that breva I was looking at, *sigh* I think I'll just get as many of the accessories as I can get my hands on and continue to avoid the ducati forums like I have been for years. Problem is they don't agree on ANYTHING over there, lengthy debates on the sergeant vs Corbin vs stock as which is best and its either love or hate for all 3(not to say we don't do that here but it seems different less annoying somehow), then into wind screen options I have no idea handful swear by one and say they get no buffeting but then some others say they have the same and get crazy buffeting now either someone is lying about their height or somehow the same bikes are setup very differently, or hell maybe they always have cross wind or slouch and the others are straight up as a pole, I tell you I don't like the vibe over there though its like going into hot topic at the mall I don't belong in there.

  2. Oh the mechanic said it wouldn't hurt to get a new slave for a much easier clutch pull and I agree so I'll be looking into that plus maybe a new solid black windscreen, anyone have good places to start me searches besides ebay? oh I'll be on ebay also but thats an obvious one.

You could try V2 in Malaga Western Australia although it sounds like brooke henry has left there's also this link which might help

I have the aprilia one already it wouldn't be just insane that it would be the same would it? that would be insane, I might have to take a look but I HIGHLY doubt it, I'll be in search of one and some decent levers and reservior caps oh and a nice big CF tank protector, no rush I'll just cruise ebay and the web till spring unless someone knows of choice places to pick things up from

  3. I picked her up today, so far it might need a new battery, was already wired for a trickle charger but I could tell they had a full on charger hooked up to it before I got there it was sitting next to it, besides a new battery(maybe) just needs some new billet or stock reservoir covers some roll-a-click levers of some type for better feel and adjustability, new grips and bar ends for looks and because they just look old, possibly heated but I don't want to tax the electrical system much if at all so heated gloves might be the answer to that. Haven't decided on any of it maybe the rizoma grips but that are too trick looking for an old sport tourer probably just some progrip gel replacements and manic salamander bar ends plus CRG or their clones, have any of you noticed pazzo's are MORE expensive now? those knock offs think they got a name for themselves now WTF? I wish I could give more of a ride report I really liked the corbin so far, clutch is different that dry clutch feels like it isn't going to grab then bam it does, rides smooth, guy put brand new dunlop qualifiers on the thing before he traded it in on a multistrada, those won't last long. It has more power than the guzzi but less than the aprilia fits perfectly in the middle and the luggage is nice, need a spare key made for the panniers but they cut an extra ignition key for me right on the spot.

Just keep it hooked up to the trickle charger. The batteries on these things is embarrassingly small.

K good to know and will do always,

THANK GOD I made it home on it yesterday we're currently getting a foot of heavy thick snow and some ice today, so happy everything worked out how it did. I'll do my best at a ride write up when its nice again.

  5. you know how I really feel? I should have never sold the Guzzi, then I wouldn't be in this mess now would I? I know I'll love this bike as much if not more in different ways, performance feels similar to the guzzi (its sure no Aprilia) but I like it that way I don't need tickets I need to ride. :bike:

  6. HEAR YE HEAR YE, I got one better YET, I'm f'n awesome I just got THIS bike instead

    http://www.cycletrader.com/find/listing/1998-Ducati-St2-97406136

for 3k, 3300 OTD has sergeant seat(they list is as corbin but I bet my left butt cheek its now I've seen them both looking on ebay), CF fender and exhaust, new tires, freshly done 12k service no salvage title or damage and from a reputable dealer I talked them down to 3k, ALL BE JEALOUS and bow before me, Brad you did light the fire and I have to thank you and when I went to test ride that bike everything didn't really add up so I was a little weary and the bike I have since purchased from that encounter is miles better, Insurance will be on the bike friday and I'll be able to pick it up monday, stupid good insurance rates full coverage $50 ded plus full tow and breakdown coverage for $20 a mo. Brad I owe you a root beer we'll go on a ride in the spring. I'm buying.

  7. A couple of years ago a friend asked me what I thought of the ST2(as he'd been offered one for very little money) and I told him what my Ducati mechanic had told me.

My Ducati mechanic Ducati John needed a loan bike to lend to customers so bought an old ST2(because it was really cheap), after several months he began to notice that everybody he lent it to commented on how nice it was (regardless of what they normally rode)and that actually without noticing he was using it rather than his own 851 when he needed a bike.

My friend bought the ST2 and loves it !!!

that about seals it for me as to which ducati I should own if ever, I'm going to try for it.

  8. The only other thing I would throw out there is that you're still looking at a Ducati. With all the attendant cost that can come with it. So you really have to be ready to sign on for the higher upkeep, unless you're up on desmo valve maintenance and the like. Whereas some dual sport thing will have a lot less cost involved with both maintenance and replacement parts if needed, and better mileage to boot.

Okay, I'm now out of responsible things to say. Just buy the damn thing and be done with it!!!

OH I would but my buddy showed me a better one at motoprimo I'm going to try talking them down then no DMV headache no damage, newer tires, and the seat and exhaust I want already on it

    http://www.cycletrader.com/find/listing/1998-Ducati-St2-97406136

much better option if I can get them down to 3, hope I can then it would make the one I was looking at for 2700 looks like a huge mistake, I think that statement can be made of all ducati's but then how many were purchased with a reasonable thought process?

  9. The ST2 (from what I know of it) is probably the most reliable Duc you can get at that price. Air cooled, 2 valve head, mild tune, etc... The few guys I know that have them love them. And you can always add pipes and whatnot as you can afford it. BUT, if it needs tires, levers, fluids, and all that to be safe it's gonna cost another grand to get going, not to mention all the DMV crap. All that said, though, it looks like a sweet bike for the price. And really, even if the stock seat's not great for a sport-tour, how bad could it be compared to your V11 or RSV-R? :huh2:

If you're anything like me, you've probably already bought it mentally and just haven't figured it out yet

don't need pipes the stockers are plenty loud and its not a bike I would care to pipe out, tires are just about 30% left for life at most and the levers are fine I just don't like them they curl up a bit and more so on the clutch side I found it annoying but an easy fix, new tires and chain will be about $500 but could roll with it easy enough until next fall or even first thing in the spring. Seat is just personal preference I had a rich maund seat and the aprilia seat was pretty damn awesome actually I had no complaints there until 3 or 4 hours in the saddle. I know I kind of have if I'm looking up some parts, the DMV sounds bad I'm going to goto one tomorrow and ask questions before I go any further and don't any of you feel scared to be more than blunt with me I don't want to make a terrible decision but it does look a lot better than the KLR650's I was looking at in the same price range.

  10. A mouse studying to become a rat. Engine is easy enough to work on but a pig to get at. Expect it to devour valve guides, especially on the rear cylinder.

    Pete

so youre saying thats a bad thing I take it

I get it, thats bad but how big of a problem is that? would it be extremely optimistic to get 30k on one of these? I've seen many aprilias in that range without a single problem ducati scares me because I haven't seen many over 20 without lots of problems.

  11. a fellow forum member got me onto this bike

    http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/hnp/mcy/2047737701.html

its got an updated ECU and warranty on that, ducati design upgraded headlight 12,650 miles and the big service done recently with new belts

cons needs an oil change, needs new tires in a few thousand, will probably need a new chain at th at time also, has a salvage title and is plated to south dakota he says I don't need to worry about inspections as its already licensed but I am not totally sure on the process the bike was knocked over upon transport to him when he purchased it and the cracked fairing plus dented tank and muffler sent the bill well over the value threshold so the damage is cosmetic, the levers are bent a little and are annoying so would need to get some pazzo's or similar oh and those mirrors he put on are terribly ugly and don't fit the bike those would have to go.

I got him down to 2700 but yet I'm not totally sure this is the best idea, have always wanted a Ducati and there isn't a cheaper easier to maintain version to be had. Might be worth buying and getting basic liability insurance to just ride the wheels off of it and sell it for parts when I upgrade. Thoughts, ideas?

  12. to be fair I did have women want to jump on the Aprilia because it was sex on wheels but not jump "me" just the bike, didn't hurt that the rear seat and the rumble of the bike stimulated their girly bits, or so I was told. GOD I miss that bike so much right now the weather has been phenomenal, I do sometimes worry I won't get to enjoy my retirement a lot of the beer delivery drives are near cripples when they retire the job is hard on your body for that long and I too don't have anything fancy a small modest house with 1 real bathroom a 2 year old computer thats can't do much anymore I just for the first time EVER got a phone that can do more than just make calls (an iphone) that I got refurbished not even new I don't go out or buy fancy clothes for the longest time all my money went to my motorcycles cigars and my kids I've cut back my cigar and motorcycle spending in the last couple years and been working on my debt my one credit card I have was at 9800 at one point not even 2 years ago, today its at 3300 so I'm almost there in a lot of ways, my cars have all been old almost beaters till I had my third child and needed room plus reliability so bought my first new car at 28, I hate being in debt but never minded when it came to motorcycles

  13. yeah its decided everyone agree's get the KLR and get my life back together before I go out and buy something on the side of stupid SOME would say having a motorcycle is on the side of stupid but those would be borish wankers.

  14. 99% of the things a man will purchase in his lifetime will depreciate. I would not let (a loan) that stand in the way of me buying another motorcycle.

well yes but I still feel like cutting into my retirement savings to do it isnt the best idea, I also wonder how much I'd lose being so early vested and paying it back with interest if it would come close to evening out at all I don't do numbers very well anymore I should call my accountant friend. I think I should save that option for a last resort move like lose the house or my wife van explodes, I'm torn but I will do the responsible thing and lay off having a loan for a couple years. put that money towards finishing off my credit cards and maybe my car. Once those are gone I can get that super duke or even the SMT or maybe a Stelvio!!!

  15. Good advice Ben. Respect to this forum.

Never pay interest on an asset that devalues :2c:

like my HOUSE???? ha paid 184k still owe about 178k and the taxes tell me its worth 139k and if I tried to sell it probably more like 115k thats just AWESOME.

  16. BFG is right. I'm an American!

    Kind of....

Actually, I'm from Texas and I'm not sure whether that's better or not.

Seriously, I'm ok, but not great, with money. I'm lucky to have a wife that is a) sensible and B) makes a lot more money than I do.

But, it is a bad idea to borrow against a retirement fund. You're putting money into it right now, it's going to be earning interest and MORE IMPORTANTLY compound interest for you. If you devalue that, then you effectively take a loan out at about three times the interest rate. First you pay the interest, second you reduce the amount going into retirement and third you reduce the capital that the retirement interest is working on.

Even Albert Einstein is reputed to have said that the most powerful force in the universe is compound interest.

The Monkey is far more succinct than I am.

I took loans out at earlier years than Pete or BFG, but they were small (~$1000) and aimed to improve my credit rating. My first 'new' bike that I took a loan on was a V11. Come to think of it, that's still the only one.

You will have a great time on KLR. Pay cash, put around on it and don't look back. Sure it's slower, but I really liked mine.

Belfast, it's time to raise a drink :drink: I'll have one in honor (honour?) of your brother and to his health- and yours.

I really do respect all your point of views you've never steered me wrong I've been living beyond my means for too long I'll put that KTM out of my mind for another year or two and just get the KLR for cash money with basic liability and black rattle can spray paint :xmas:

it is interesting to see how other people and cultures look at financing and purchases in my mind I'm only young so long and I'll be old for a long time with the much harder ability to ride a motorcycle so I'm still torn but I should start making the more sensible decisions I'm 30 now and I'd have to take out about 6-8 grand from my 401k which only has 20 in it, BUT thats after only 3 years of contributions not bad I say. I know I can be happy on the KLR better bikes will come my way eventually.

  17. Asking a bike forum for finance advice is...touchy. I'd have to say I wouldn't take a loan against your retirment for a toy, but it's all you in the the end. I'd stick with the dual sport beater plan myself. That way, if something happens again (let's hope not) you won't be upside down on yet another toy.

TRUE words spoken and I'm leaning that way, The only thing I got going the other way is I'm only young once and for so long I have plenty of time to build my retirement and its not gone just repaid over time and its my first real off in 10 years but that doesn't mean a whole lot I could crash again tomorrow my fault or not but best not to think about it that way either or who would even ride? It does seem like a stupid idea but I wouldn't ask just any forum for finacial advice most of you have twice the experience I do in all matters and I wouldn't take the advice of one person alone well maybe Jaap or JRT but defiantly not BFG.

  18. would it be a bad idea to take a loan from my 401k for a decent bike?

Yes. Never take out a loan, even if its against yourself, for a 'toy'.

    Pete

WELL ok, in a perfect world yes, or if I had your money, but how about in the more realistic world?

  19. would it be a bad idea to take a loan from my 401k for a decent bike? I'm not talking exceptional here like 5-8k range used griso or super duke or hell even tuono's are pretty cheap, no rush and not sure its a good idea either. I do like the idea of paying myself back with interest as we had some financial troubles a year ago and my credit isn't good now, well even if it was would using and paying back 401k money be better? my wife works at my bank and said most people just don't know they can which is why they take out higher third party loans all the time for stupid things. I will say she hasn't been the best at financial advice either as she was the main reason we were in such a pickle not too long ago.

  20. you will be sorely disappointed in the KLR's power or lack of it. I've owned a couple, love the long suspension but that was it.

    KLRunder35W.jpg

I just need something to ride I can get on the cheap I know it'll be a dog compared to my previous bikes and thats fine it'll get me through till I can get a griso or a super duke or tuono whatever comes up as the best deal when I'm ready, thing is I can get a decent KLR for around 2k all the other bikes I'm looking at are 8-10k so they have to wait. Be nice to have 2 bikes again and keep the KLR as a bad weather hack or just in case.

  21. Well, if you're in the market for a relatively inexpensive Griso, there's this one

    http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=608091

    and this one

    http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=618954&highlight=griso

I have no interests in either of these. I just browse forums and saw them.

umm, WOW, thats a lot cheaper than I expected. I REALLY like the first one I might have to talk to my credit union, probably won't happen right now but next fall I bet I could get one of these even less than the super dukes and sexier, still want to get a KLR seems like the rat bike to own.

    Shouldn't be a problem:

    Steve

oh Awesome thanks, nice thing about a KLR is they're dirt cheap and totally worth keeping incase your main bike is in the shop or maybe just not nice enough out to take for a ride. I will have a bike again come spring!!!
