  1. Hi, in the middle of a computer and web design degree, so spend far too much time online and using search engines. I recognised the basic starfire-had one years ago but had no idea what the engine was. Cheers Gary PS does this earn me my first quiz point?
  2. BSA prototype 1969 303cc, Fitchel&Sachs engine 18ps at 5500 rpm in BSA Starfire frame Gary
  3. Cheers Big J, that was going to be tomorrow mornings entertainment, I've got some 16 gauge stainless sheet I'll cut it to shape then sandwich the two halves and bolt the lot together, failing that duct tape and cable ties it is Its nice to know I'm not the only one, and I'm sure Baldini could here the swearing, just above my MATES!! laughing. And at least I didn't have to watch it happen, and I would swap a stiff leg for not having to buy another pedal too. Cheers Gary
  4. Hi all, while turning round in the car park at Vernyw yesterday, my foot shot slipped and ended up dropping my V11, fortunately more sidways than forward motion, it fired me across the bike and up the car park like a ball much to the amusements of my mates. So now know, at least at slow speed, that the cylinder/head protectors work as the bike settled onto them the mirror and footpeg. The only casualty apart from pride was the rear brake pedal that snapped in two. Carried on for the rest of the day and it is amazing how much you can miss the use of a brake that really is only used to balance the back end into corners. Took the lever to a mate who is a brilliant welder in anything steel s/s or ally for him to have a look at, he fell about saying he can weld most things but not the pigeon snot this was made of. A new one is £60, so am going to try some of the guzzi breakers. Cheers Gary.

    Crazy Norwegians

Hi knowing this chief there will be a pump in the top box hose in the panniers and tell the merseyside residents (sorry thats are customers-the chief went to business school!!!!) that everything is great and there will be no reduction in fire cover. Despite 4-6 machines off the run each duty and aerial appliances on 45 min standby-but he gets lots of awards for management stratagies so thats ok. I'm not bitter and twisted at all. Cheers Gary

    Crazy Norwegians

Hi I've just put my name forward to join our fire service bike team, it responds to city centre alarm calls a great deal of which are false alarms, but can get there quicker than the appliances which are also on route to the shout. Unfortunately would not be a guzzi but std home office spec pan european same as police and paramedics use in UK. Cheers Gary
  7. Hi cheers for that, bought 2 quarts of heavy this afternoon from Demon Tweeks so will have a play during the week. Cheers Gary
  8. Hi all, not wanting to hung for starting another oil thread , but have a quick question. I'm about to change all the oils, engine, box and diff. I'm using mobil synthetic in the engine already so will carry on with that. I am going to try Redline Heavy weight in the box and diff(have used redline oils in my lotus seven rep for a few years) but was just wondering if those out there already using it, still add the "Roper dose of snot" to the diff? I will now go and hide in the fallout shelter to avoid oil thread rage! Cheers Gary
  9. That is just too damn sneeky for words, I bet they have to keep an army of coppers in the bushes to protect the bloody thing form getting cremated-from vast experience wheelie bins burn very well and virtually explode when you hit burning ones with water! its a favorite pastime in my station area for the kids setting fire to them. Although I did see a speed trap in Liverpool a couple of months ago , on a junction of a side road off an inner city dual carriegway there was a very attractive woman stood on the corner apparently waiting for someone, with a large handbag. when I got close enough (I was coming form another side road opposite the one she was on) I could see 5-6 police cars and a couple of bikes all ready to come out to the dual carriegeway and the womans handbag was a speed camera in a sling arrangement around her shoulder, when she caught some one one of the back-up vehicles was sprinting out into the rush hour traffic to stop the vehicle. This was a busy road, and again as it is in my station area I know we do not attend many accidents here(1 in the last five years I can remember) so compared to other local roads is a very safe one, can only see it as a very sneeky and cynical money making scheme. Cheers Gary.

    Welsh Waltz II

Hi count me in, I'll check my shifts later and get back to you all. Cheers Gary.
  11. Hi I cycle as well, mainly time trials. But have had a couple of years off and am struggling to get going again. Cheers Gary
  12. Sorry mines a bit boring, Peugeot 306 HDI diesel estate (useful for tools and german shepherd), missus has 2.0 litre Renault clio sport now that is fun! silly horse power in a small car, but we always seem to go places in mine, so I end up with space shuttle mileages and she gets good trade-ins as her cars are always below average miles!! I get my kicks with the V11 and 31/2 morini. Cheers Gary
  13. Hi mine went the begining of December, on a 2000 V11 so not bad going. Replaced with an odyssey battery now spins up really well even when its been standing outside for a couple of weeks. Cheers Gary
  14. Guzzirider hadn't seen that one, had to check it wasn't April first. It absolutely buggers belief that a-someone could come up with this bloody stupid idea(you can imagine what sort of git would apply for the job) and b-probably gets paid extremely well for such Bollox. I seem to recall that exceeding the speed limit to overtake was acceptable as long as the speed is returned to legal limit once the manouvre was completed-within reason. And to use the left hand lane where ever possible except for overtaking then move back left. So these people would be going against the governments own highway code? Is it just me or are the lunatics firmly in charge of the asylum now? I retire in 4 years and will leave this country a fast as wheels will allow-about20 MPH by then at this rate. Cheers gary
  15. Hi Alex, according to the blurb that came with the unit it covers France, Germany, Benelux, Austria and Switzerland. The cable port on the database unit attaches to an adapter with a standard USB lead to attach to your PC. The Antenna is hard wired to the unit and does not have bluetooth capability. I agree with Martin it is no substitute for good observation, and believe inappropriate speed is a problem rather than just speed, as this goverment is intent on pushing in order to keep the money flowing in to the police forces(no insult Martin) via the camera parnerships and the £20 million the treasury has just had to admit it has made from the cameras itself. I would not support for instance high speeds through 30 MPH country villages, but when you see speed limits imposed on country roads for no apparent reason except the camera sited a 100 metres past the sign. An example that springs to mind is the A34 between Stoke and Stafford, its dual carriageway with no habitation appart from the occasional farm. But the speed limit changes about every mile from 60 to 40 back to 60, then maybe 50 and back to 60 and after each change surprise surprise there is a camera. If someone could explain a real reason I would be interested, but it comes across as one of the most cynical money making schemes in the country. Also the road from wolverhampton to Bridgenorth, nice country road, half in Staffordshire half in Shropshire, in Staffs half about 6 cameras in the Shrops half none. Same road, apparently same risks, very different council response. Sorry to bang on about this, but this Government has abdicated road policing to cameras rather than human beings. I drive fire engines for a living so appreciate the results of inapropriate speed at first hand, but also the results of drunk drivers, unlicenced drivers, joyriders, mobile phone users and any other number of useless gits, none of whom get caught by bloody cameras. I was knocked off on my way to work by an unlicenced woman driver, who had no insurance but was still prepared to take her young children to school half a mile from home, happy in the knowledge she was extremely unlikely to be caught unless something else happened. Sorry I'll shut up now. Cheers Gary.
  16. I would have to agree with John, I tend to frequent quiter roads and avoid the main bike meeting areas, or accept if going near them you have to keep it down and watch for the camera vans and coppers hiding in the hedges. Last summer on my way to a guzzi owners meet at the Ponderosa Cafe(Horshoe pass-North Wales) in about a 12-15 miles stretch up to the cafe I passed 6 different police check points-either cameras or roadside stop on whatever idea they could come up with. This included a police discovery(4x4) parked in the middle of the road just after a blind bend, when I stopped to photograph this piece off stupidity was threatened with having my camera confiscated, after telling copper he had better call for back-up first, I told him not to worry he would get his own copy of the pictures after I had e-mailed them to his chief constable (one of the head speeding nazis in the UK). At this point they discussed it between them, jumped in the car an f***ed off. I e-mailed the photos and got a nice reply, thnking me and stating that the officers in question would be queried on there parking tactics and inviting to a meeting with a senior officer at police HQ, which I declined- I might like to twist the tigers tail but am not completely soft. Also avoided N.Wales for the next few weeks Cheers Gary The following photo was e-mailed to me
  17. Sorry missed a couple of the pics off the post - here they are
  18. Hi all, this may be of interest to the european members of this forum. In the UK the use of fixed speed cameras has become a total pain in the a**e . I have been trying a new unit which may be off some help called the Inforad GPS speed camera warning system. I know some of the newer sat nav systems can warn you of cameras but these require the whole system, which I neither want nor can afford at the moment. This system has a main body, with detachable database unit, a gps anntenna, and a very bright led mounted on the end of a flexible wand. The only connections are power and earth all the others are pre wired. The unit is quite bulky and the best location I found was in the tail unit on an aluminium plate, the anntenna is the black square unit attached to the top of the tail light lens(it has to be able to see the sattelites. The display led is attached to the clocks. The pictures hopefully will make this clear. So far it seems to be pretty good it has shown me all bar one speed camera I have come across, it is always only going to be as good as its database, which is upgradeable, it has also warned me off a couple that did not exist and on motorways also shows up a couple locally just of the junctions on other raods if they are within range. The database unit conects via a lead to the pc and can be upgraded from inforads website through the managemnt system that comes as part of the set-up, it only detects fixed sites by gps location not mobile radar cameras. You can set different parameters such as how early the system warns you of an up coming camera. The display is green normaly, red when approaching the camera and flashing red if you are over the speed for that camera, useful if you are not exactly sure what the speed limit at the camera is. I have no links to the company, I just bought the unit in my mates bike shop to see if it was any good( did manage a small discount as guinea pig ), and thought it might be of interest to people. If you want more info please get back to me. The company has a website at www.gpsinforad.co.uk If you are interested and can't find a unit locally my mate John can be contacted at Bridge Road Motorcycles. Again I'm not trying to drum up business just pass on the information if anyone is interested. Cheers Gary.
  19. Hi Martin, as a firefighter I'll look after the campfire, but still does'nt stop me from the daft injuries. Pane of glass fell out of window while breaking into burning house nearly severing my kneecap , quite a few others and not neccesarily reserved for work. Putting some boxes in the loft last winter stepped backwards and fell through the loft hatch, nearly wrecked both ankles for the second time! Be careful out there, or at least keep us all amused. Cheers Gary
  20. I've found a company doing replacement regulators www.electrexworld.co.uk but they only list for the 1000 DAYTONA, 1000 QUOTA, 1100 CALIFORNIA/SPORT, will this fit a V11? Are all the 1100 engines the same in regards alternator and regulators? Thanks for any help. Cheers Gary
  21. I've been trying to find out why my battery failed to charge up with the engine running the other day and left me beside the road. I,ve checked the alternator no shorts and a healthy 85 volts ac with the yellow leads disconected. When I disconnected the regulator leads there was no continuity between the leads and the body on 5 of the wires but on the black lead (it's black coming out of the regulator but connects to a red/green wire in the loom) there is 1400 ohms resistance on a 2000 scale. As far as I can tell this means the regulator is knackered , can anyone confirm this for me before I try to find another one. Cheers Gary.
  22. Hi all, I have asked a few quesions this week this should be the last! My 2000 V11 disgraced itself this weekend by having to come home on the back of a transporter. The battery had gone flat. I had been using a pair of eleci socks and I think this didn't help. First the tacho stopped working, so I unplugged the socks and turned the lights off to allow the battery to recharge. Then when I had stoped at a cafe it would not start on the button, just dead no clicks etc. no headlamp either. Bump started first attempt so decided to head for home, still with everything off to allow the battery to recharge. But about 20 miles later it started to mis-fire then died altogether. On getting home I took the battery off and checked it was reading 10 volts, so put it on charge overnight on an automatic charger(shuts off and trickles when battery is charged up). After 20 hours was showng 13.4 volts. Refitted it and everything seemed to be back to normal. Checked voltage at battery with engine running-14 volts at 3000 RPM. I am curious as to why the battery did not recharge with the everything swithched off while he bike as running? Am I missing something qbvious? The electrics are standard except for having fitted relays and a direct feed from the battery to them(mounted in headlamp shell) to power the headlamp, with the original feed just used to switch the relays, and a fly lead to plug the socks in, I have checked these no problems. Any thoughts appreciated-sorry post is so long. Cheers Gary

    Winter!!

I was out Sunday with about 10 other friends/loonies but never made it home due to my battery expiring. Although it was supposedly 4 degrees (balmy for wales) it felt a damn site colder while waiting for the recovery truck. Here is a couple of pictures. Cheers gary

    relays

Hi all, sorry to pester again, but I could do with a list of which relay is which from front to back, or a link to a previous answer. I'm sure I read it somewhere in the past but am damned if I can find it again. Cheers Gary.
