  1. I've now rewired the regulator to battery connections end of hot fuse problem, and now charges at over 14 volts thats a success. But the if I pull the main fuse out and put an ammeter across the connections I'm still getting a .75 amp discharge to the regulator and the battery drops voltage-understandable, leave the main fuse out and no problem, so I expect the regulator is up the spout, but electrex where supposed to get back to me this afternoon, but I heard nothing. Having admitted to them the main fuse was getting hot I suppose they will say its my fault the regulator has packed up. This is getting expensive in the last 18 months that will be 2 x hawker batteries and 2x regulators . Again anyone with any ideas would be appreciated, before I bite the bullet for another regulator. Cheers Gary
  2. Spoke to electrex today, they say the same thing ignore normal loom connection, and to cure the hot fuse rewire from regulator to battery with heavy gauge wire and new inline fuse to cure bad connection at original fuse that is causing resistance and producing heat. When I checked battery this morning it was down to 4.5 volts. Recharged and having checked the loom for shorts and finding no problems Ileft the ignition off and connected the earths to the battery and with the 10 amp setting on my multi-meter bridged the positive connections to the battery in turn with no response till I tried the connection to the regulator, and found it was drawing 0.7 amps, after pulling fuses to isolate different circuits, it is definitely the regulator, which was confirmed by unplugging the output from the unit itself. After recontacting electrex again the guy I spoke to still thinks its because of the wiring to the battery, that doesn't make sense to me, but I will rewire the the connection in the morning anyway to cure the hot fuse. I am not an electronics expert just a competent amateur vehicle electrician, so I was wondering if anyone else has any ideas. The only thing coming to mind is if the resistance in the battery connection is high will this upset the control electronics in the regulator, but why is the fault showing when the ignition is off ? Or has the high resistance buggered the regulator or is it just knackered. As usual any thoughts would be appreciated. Cheers Gary
  3. Thanks for that I'll have a look at running aheavier gauge cable to the battery. Cheers Gary
  4. The battery seems to have recharged OK over night, it was reading 13.4 when I took it off the charger this morning. Refitted and everything fired up fine, checked output to battery across the terminals and read between, 13.4 and 13.7 up to 5000rpm. When I felt the 30amp fuse it was hot to the touch after only a short period. I have one idea, when I checked the wiring over I remembered that the new regulator had only five wires instead of six. 2xyellow-generator,large red-battery, blue-warning light and black-earth. I have nothing wired to the original red/black wire that feeds the loom directly, I wonder if I would be better splitting the output of the one red wire to feed both the battery wire red/green and the red/black together to split the load and maybe reduce the current to the fuse? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Cheers Gary
  5. Hi all, went out to use the bike this morning nothing, battery is dead, 3 month old hawker, have put it on charge and hope it recovers! The other day while out the generator light came on and off for about 10secs, then everything normal, and just now while having a check around the 30 amp no.3 fuse has melted the plastic body. I am now at tank off and checking wiring and earth stage. I fitted an electrex regulator when I installed the new battery as the original failed and fried the previous hawker battery! I can't check generator or regulator output till I see if the battery recovers from deep discharge-less than a volt on the multimeter. But if anyone has any ideas I would appreciate it. Cheers Gary
  6. Thanks for that Raz, should have searched first myself, brain not in gear this evening. Cheers Gary
  7. I was checking things over before a trip next week and found play in the bushing at the frame end of the torque arm from the top of the bevel housing. I've had a look at the parts book but it doesn't seem to list these individualy. Has anyone else come across this and what did they do to sort the problem. Knowing parts prices it may be cheaper to buy a couple of quality rod-ends and make my own arm. Cheers Gary
  8. Hi Docc, I found the same thing at about 15,000. When I took the bolts out they both had wear from the pinion shaft, as they act as cotters to locate end location of the uj on the pinion shaft. I replaced all four bolts with high tensile ( 12.2 grade if memory serves me right) with loctite. They where fine this morning when I had the wheel out and greases the ujs at 26000. Cheers Gary.
  9. Hi Martin, I've entered again and will see if I can better last two years. I thought it was a good omen when one of the landmarks is 5 minutes from home. And the three wirral ones are 20 minutes. Scotland and Cornwall are still a bl**dy long way though. Maybe this year I'll actually post some more info and pictures, but of course not of the landmarks Good Luck and be safe Cheers Gary
  10. Hi all, I fitted an electrex world unit yesterday, I think this is similar to the American units mentioned in previous postings, now seems to be charging fine. Has the same five wires 2xyellow,1 black, 1 red and 1 white. Connected up yellows, black to earth, red to red/green,white to blue. I left the red/black original alone. Everything works, charges to 13.9 volts and fitted ok. Still think my oddesy battery is fried but I'll give it a couple of weeks and see if it recovers. Electrex world is a UK company so might be off use to UK and European members, they dont actually list V11s, but list 1100 sports and calis it was an RR451 unit, ordered Thursday, here Friday good service. Cheers Gary
  11. Across the battery terminals, with a digital multimeter, and the engine off then running and gradually raising the revs. Till as I say 17.9 at 4000 rpm. In England Cheers Gary
  12. Hi Keith, like you say if you don't take the piss usually no problems. On the 916/996 the termigonni's have not for road use, but it's stamped in such a position, that without taking the seat off, standing on your head and dislocating your neck you can't see it. A wonderful piece of after-market engineering. Cheers Gary
  13. Hi all, my 2000 naked has been a little slow turning over when starting for the last week or so, which as it has a hawker odyssey battery, less than 12 months old was a bit puzzling. So as I got off work handy this afternoon, I thought I'd check things over. So started with battery connections and cables to starter, no problems, so I checked the battery voltage, about 12.8v,. I would have expected there or there abouts. But when I started up and checked alternator output I was horified to watch the voltage reach 17.5 volts at 4000 rpm. Shut the bike off and stood back, typical, as an advanced instructor I needed the bloody thing for the first course of the year this saturday, but will not run it again till I've replaced the regulator/rectifier. I suppose I should be lucky at least the ECU survived, but I suspect the battery is toast as well, so thats Xmas overtime spent! Bl@@dy motorcycles. Cheers Gary
  14. Hi Gary, I've got mistral's on and have no problems, but then the two places I use, one deals with old brits and the other the tester has a 996 on Termigonni race pipes! As long as they are not specifically marked "not for road use", there are no standards for bike exhausts any more, its purely subjective to the tester, if he thinks there too loud they fail, so most smaller shops are not going to chase trade away by failing exhaust systems. Cheers Gary
  15. Hi, as usual when I go to look at problem leak has disapeared, but checked bolts and large nut on sender, and the nut took about 3/4 of a turn without to much effort, so maybe that was it. will see what happens. Cheers Gary
  16. Thanks for that ratchet, I'll have a look at all of those when I pull the tank off tomorrow. Those where my first thoughts, I just wondered whether this was a common fault, but as it would appear not, one or other of the above is most likely. I'll post when I've had a look. Cheers Gary
  17. Hi all, I was out for the day today and while sat outside a cafe with a brew and sticky bun, I looked at the bike. Bad move as I noticed what appeared to be fuel on top of the left-hand throttle body. On closer inspection it appears I have developed a leak either round or through the sender for the fuel light. The little rubber cover on the bottom of it was happily collecting fuel. Dried everything off and decided it was a very minor leak and the heat of the bike would probably evaporate it. I got home in the dark so will have to whip the tank of tomorrow, but wondered if this was a common problem? Cheers Gary
  18. Pete will you have web access while your in the UK, if not I'll PM you my phone No. and arrange to collect the sheet from you while your over here. Cheers gary.
  19. Hi Pete, I would like one of your plates, I am in Liverpool, so if you could give me a price I will PM you my address, or come and pick it up of you while you're over here. Cheers gary
  20. Hi all, I hope everyone has a great xmas and new year. Cheers Gary
  21. Hi all, I've put in for the time off, but as our admin section are now shut till 2007 won't know for a bit-this despite us being a 24 hour emergency service! Cheers Gary
  22. Hi Martin, excellent reports as usual. I'm still in awe of your efforts .I seemed to run out of time and then money because of being on strike for a while. I managed a bronze award this year, not as good as last years silver, but promise to try harder in 2007. I recognized some of your locations I did Northern England, Southern Scotland, all of Wales bar the Archery range and some of the Midlands. See you next year, I will enter again, and hope to do some more of the meetings etc. although I've discovered that I hadn't renewed my owners club subscription , I wondered what had happened to grumblemonger! So don't know next years dates till my renewed subs and next edition are sorted. Cheers Gary
