  1. I only changed the oil because it was a year old - & this time because I sat in an awful traffic jam & it got very hot -130 on my dip-stick gauge.
  2. UFI standard -2328700 30.15.30.00 says on the filter oil the gasket screw until contact tighten by hand 10-12nm This time I pre-filled the filter with oil & screwed it on with the sump inverted.
  3. Back to my version of this topic, I've only just realised the significance of over-tightening... By putting such a whack on the filter, presumably I'd over-tensioned the rubber of the 'o' ring, so losing it's resistance & allowing it to eventually give way (under high heat/fully synth 5/w50?) & allow the filter to loosen. Before writing my first post in this thread, I put the new filter in as tight as I normally would a filter (I'll probably buy a tool & lighter torque wrench for next time), trusting the jubilee/hose clip to do it's job if I haven't done mine right... I'm not into dropping the sump again just yet to check, but will post if I've done something daft. BTW under 6k between filters, under 3k each oil change. Standard airbox & filter, no crap in the sump at all. I'm thinking about films which epitomise the Thatcher years/philosophy... I remember seeing the Greenaway things, dead swans & shit etc... seems true enough...
  4. No manhole cover on a Jackal, Ratch -filter in sump. I've remembered. too, that my torque wrench starts at 20ft/lbs... I'm old enough to shudder at any possibility of Uncle Bob being related to the Big "T", evil witch of England, who ripped the heart out of our country with the nonsense she set in motion. That may get a few replies...
  5. I'll confess I don't have a proper wrench -but I reckon 10nm is somewhere near 8 foot-pounds, & I put a lot more weight on that filter than I would on a 6mm bolt. But tomorrow, because I'm a neurotic procrastinator (I know, I'm a shrink) -I'll take a detour to a car parts shop & buy a filter wrench & fit it to my torque bar, drop the oil & sump again & see how tight it is... I promise not to lie to you (honest, you can trust me...)
  6. Cali Jackal with what some people may think of as an upside-down filter. No formal training or qualifications, but a lot of years & a few bikes & cars and never a filter has been over or under-tightened by my fair hairy hands. With previous posts on this in mind I put a bit more pressure on my filter than usual, & inwardly shrivelled because I hate coming to a filter so tight I have to butcher it to get it off... & belt & braces, a jubilee clip. Thank you lads because I dropped the sump last night & found that clip bang up against the pressure valve (I'd left it a wee bit backed off just to see-) & once I'd removed the clip that sucker span out of it's thread as light as if it was a butter knife in margarine on a hot day. I don't have shares in Jubilee.
  7. The new European Test has caused the closure of many Riding Test Centres in the UK - here in Wales learner riders have to ride for over 2 hours, on a 125cc bike in dangerous conditions to take their test(s!) -or if they want to take the test on a bigger bike & not be limited to 33bhp for 2 years they have to pay their instructor to accompany them. In bigger countries this may seem a small journey (?) but a lot of us think that this is an unfair restriction on new riders- and there are already knock-on effects on dealerships & trainers which will ultimately affect us all. If you are able to join us for a protest ride on Saturday 11th July, from 3 departure points -or join us along the way -go to http://www.2-far-to-go.tk/ or email toofar2go2@yahoo.co.uk for further details.
  8. That's how they come, on Calis -screws with 'o' rings. I did what you suggest to a pair of Honda forks I fitted to my V50 once -you have to be good with your tap though, or you'll have leaky legs -and like me end up taking them out to 8mm plugs! Please note my level of expertise before taking any of my 'advice' Sucking the oil out through the top with a pump like this should work, though if you've read what comes before on this thread you'll want to flush them to get rid of the swarf. Anyway, whaddya know about oil height?
  9. Does anyone know if 100mm air gap applies to other 'zocchi forks? -I've finally got around to changing fork oil - non-adjustable dampers- on my 2000 Jackal- it's done about 25000 & I can see the signs of someone doing them previously, by marks on the caps of the bottom bolts which hold the plungers into the legs (marked MA23 936). I swished & pumped around some very old stinky petrol & flushed with brake cleaner, got some silvery dust out & rinsed til fairly clear. Other than that, not much sign of wear and seals are good. The manual says to replace .560 litres, which is more than I got out of them.
  10. It's really difficult to keep it to 5 (for now...) Jihem -thanks for taking me back into the darkness with Nick Cave -loved the collaboration with PJ Harvey, Henry Lee Also thanks for ChickenShack's I'd Rather Go Blind - Yeah but I still prefer Etta James doing it -have you heard Paul Weller's cracking version? Now there' s singing with feeling... also check out his Sunflower, & Wildwood OK I'll start with him... Paul Weller Sunflower Tom Waits (Looking for the) Heart of Saturday Night -this has a totally inappropriate video but the song's the thing (Looking for the) Heart of Saturday Night -or this live one from 1975 has a great introduction: -http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=hiW0PmjWdxM Ry Cooder - I Think It's Going To Work Out Fine Edwyn Collins -A Girl Like You The Cardigans - My Favourite Game
  11. Ah... I've been barking up the wrong lamp post again... thanks, mate.
  12. Greg, I went to art college with Mick Hucknall (Simply Red), & painted next to him -he practised (pretty good) harmonica impersonations at the same time as painting, & the studio often resounded to my "Shut the f*** up, Huck, I can't think!" -didn't know he'd make such a good living from it one day... Anyway, I wouldn't put anything he's made in my top ...er... never mind... (yeh, sour grapes)
  13. I've had as good a look on my Jackal as I can for the diagnostic LED -the plug to put it to, from the ECU, is there, but I don't know where the LED is hiding or if it's on these models. I have a separate 12v LED I've used to connect to the diagnostic on my car, with a couple of earths, a B+ & FEN -does anyone know which wires to connect to which pins?
  14. Thanks again Raz, I have a sensible reading at last. I opted for scotchblock connectors wrapped in insulating tape near the ecu, which on my bike lives under the side-panel -fairly out of the Welsh weather (salty coastal winds, & British councils throw salty grit all over the roads in Winter) cheers, Phil
  15. Cheap? Thrifty? -I bought these (2 for the price of 1 £6.99!) -but as with many technological marvels I haven't a clue how to use it... that makes me double-clueless... I can do the wiring up of test plugs (female bullets, methinks -does anyone know if there's any danger to components if I solder them in?) & I even realise that the dmm's probes have rubber safety caps to remove before I can get a reading (!) -but can someone tell me what range to set the dial to? I'm guessing 200m on the V scale, but I don't want to fry anything...
  16. Does anyone know if copper is ok for the bends? In UK water pipes are either 13mm or 22mm o/s diameter. 22 may sound a lot for 19mm rubber, but a squirt of maintenance spray & it slips on nice & snug. I wonder if the PE push-fit type materials are suitable? Wire spring clips of about the right diameter are used for washing machine waste pipes. If there's a mod watching, it may be worth updating earlier posts -I got excited and almost went out to get pvc bends without reading on...
  17. Ahhh... I reckon 30203a means taper rollers... I'll come back to this post in a few years. God, I love that Jackal!
  18. Ah! Thanks Raz, saved a good bit of hassle there... explains all that stuff about grease nipples where I haven't got any! If I had a naked shaft thrashing through the grit I reckon I'd be slipping a condom on it -an old inner tube? At least it means I know the state of the sw/ arm bearings -can't imagine how a bike with only 22k on it could have such swivelling bearings... I reckon a bit of heat should loosen them up enough (all needs repainting anyway -they use a lot of salt grit in Wales) -too much of a knock & the bearings look like they'll disintegrate.
  19. I want to do this right like Greg recommends -so... 1/ having taken swing arm off, do I have to use some sort of puller to get the uj out or is it ok to tap it out from the rear, through the tunnel? 2/ Everything I've seen so far looks to be good, no unreasonably shiny grooves & swarf, still greasy -which is amazing given the amount of play in the swing arm bearings -is that how they're supposed to be -do the threaded pins take the strain?
  20. Great stuff, thanks for the link & to all who upload there! ... now if no one posts anything similar to my apparently conservative set-up, I'll fork out cash to have mine dyno'd & put it here. Dan "Couldn't hook up, old link maybe. Are they still available??" -I had same, & realised I wasn't logged in. Once I'd logged in, all as clear as the misty vapour from my nostrils on these Wintry nights...
  21. Is there one place (here?) where people could up/download custom maps? The range of maps PC put on their site is probably good -but as far as I know the only mod to my Jackal is the exhaust balance pipe from a 1000 le mans -maybe something done to the mufflers too, they look like standard lafranconis but they are LOUD -I don't have anyone to compare with.
  22. Looks like a reasonable jaunt, & before the famous Scots midges (?). I reckon there's a fair chance that I'll get a chance to join you!
  23. It's all in the title... I have a Jackal with 2 front discs running off the hand-lever... I liked the linked set-up on my V50, so if anyone favours a standard set-up & wants to swap master cylinders etc as necessary, please get in touch.
  24. I don't know if anyone's posted before on the Harper "outsider" but this external filter conversion looks like an answer to anyone with sleepless nights.
  25. -ulp- I'd better leave my botchery to external home-made brackets etc... & I'll check out bullet-proof clamps rather than worm-drive clips. cheers, Phil
