Magnetti-Marelli

Watching "LeMans", ( Steve McQueen, 1971) the Ferraris are festooned with Magnetti-Marelli stickers. My riding buddy asked if they were an old company. I guessed they made radios before the war. "Er, that was Ducati," says he.

So I come to the fountain head and ask those who know: what of Marelli?

Well, OK , so "Google" is the fountain head.

Marelli started in 1919 with money from FIAT to supply magnetos and ignition parts for autos. It did invlove itself in radio and TV as well as all things automotive from ignition to lighting and suspension to braking.

It has partnered with many big names : FIAT, RCA, GE, Bosch, GTE, Exide, Weber, Veglia-Borelli, Nippondenso and Midas.

But , let the record show, George Lucas isn't mentioned anywhere in the extensive history. :bier:

Was MM involved in all the sparky special effects in Star Wars?

MM light sabres. "Hold on, it got a bit damp yesterday - I'll be with you in a second, you just go on. Start, you bastard!"

Or did you mean the Prince of Darkness, Joseph Lucas?

Heh, get this...

So before our move to NC, I sold my ancient Chevy Suburban, as it simply couldn't make(or was worth shipping) the trip from CA -> NC :P

So, for the last couple months, our family of 5 has been using a single car, which has been "fun" <_ over the last month i did some research on various vehicles and for reasons ended up buying a volvo xc70.>

Aaaanyway, how does this relate?

Well, it seems that from 2000ish->2002ish, Volvo used an ETM(electronic throttle module) that although is supposed to last 100k+ miles, wears out in about 40k. Now, what is this thing you ask? Well, it is basically a potentiometer, with physical brushes dragged over a conductive disk to tell the ECU the throttle position. Sound familar.... TPS anyone?

Oh, and guess who made the defective one? Magnetti-Marelli

Oh, and guess who makes the 2003ish+ replacement? Bosch

heh

I was going to guess Cliff Jeffries Industries or GEI :P

Now everyone is going to rush out and try to fit BMW TPSs on our bike. <_>

If you pop the hood & the sticker on the starter sez "Valeo", we're going to have to start addressing you as Lord Vader.

Don't know if that's a good or bad thing, Al.

BMW V-12's since 1988 used 2 throttle motors from Bosch

(Drossel-klappers, or DK's for short) They are crap.

As are the ones used on Mercedes 4,6,8,and 12 cyl. cars since 92. Made by VDO.

$800-$2000 each, no Harley substitute available.

heh... yeah, we'll see <_>

Coincidentall this week Volvo just issued a memo that will either:

a: Fully reimburse owners who have spent their own funds to replace a defective ETM already

b: All future failures will be covered for free

This covers 99-01 models up to 10yr/200k miles for the part(Magnetti-Marelli).

We can only hope that if the Bosch unit is similarly problematic(so far it is not) that they will extend similar coverage.
