cash1000
I've got 3 bolts in tappitt covers on my RM that the threads are stripping out. As these bolts are being taken out each time I do valve clearances I'm thinking a Time-sert thread repair is the way to go rather than helli coil as they are stronger. What size do I need? cash1000
Many thanks Doc. I want to order kit today and forgot to bring bolt to work
MartyNZ
I have a box of helicoils to do the job if you are stuck. Not as good as Timesert, but still work ok. And you can have them NOW if that is important.
cash1000
Hi MartyNZ I won't have time this weekend so no panic. But many thanks for the offer Time sert is not cheap. Best price I've got is $220 for kit. That's from Wurth with works discount. Rep trying to get me a better price (Fellow motorcyclist) Will be worth it if I have to end up replacing all 16 threads! gstallons
I have Time=Sert , Heli-Coil and a kit from Fastenal . For this the heli-Coil would be fine .
Rolf Halvorsen
Correct assembled Helicoil thread is the simplest and best way. When you insert it deep enough, it will prevent to be unscrewed. The top surface will not be changed.
cash1000
Thanks guys for the advice. I surpose torque on these bolts wont be that much so helicoil is way to go.

docc
Seems the sump fasteners are the same M6x1.0 as the valve covers. One of my fourteen pulled its threads out. I have the correct "HeliCoil" ("Recoil ", made in Australia), but not the special "STI" tap to install them. Is that special tap a must?
Chuck
Not necessarily the same manufacturer, but definitely the correct pitch diameter and pitch.
bbolesaz
If you are helicoil-ing a block, you need a bottoming tap, not a tapered tap. The tapering tap can be helpful to cleanly cut the 1st couple of threads at the top of the hole, then finish in with the bottoming tap.
bbolesaz
BTW, I would use Time-Serts over HeliCoils. https://www.timesert.com/
Kiwi_Roy
I used Helicoils on my VII Sport tappet covers, most of the holes are not blind, They make a job that's better than original.
gstallons
I'm THE authority on ruining things . Get the Heli-Coil and practice on some junk til you feel confident in what you're doing . It's easy . If a Simpleton like myself can do it , you can too !
