2. Hey Joe Jimi Hendrix

3. Put it where you want it, Average White Band

4. Sweet Jane Lou Reed

On a whim of the day, my top five:

1. Led Zepplin's Stairway to Heaven

2. Iron Butterfly's In a Gadda Da Vita

3. Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody

4. Jimi Hendrix Experience's version of Bob Dylan's All Along The Watchtower

5. Neil Young and Crazy Horse's Hey Hey My My into the black

But there are a lot of contenders so tomorrow it may change

EDIT

The Who's Baba O'Riley My Generation (the first punk rock hit?) may replace on of the above, but which one????

See the "church quartet with stage fright" rip throught it at Monterey

The church quartet with stage fright a.k.a. THE WHO.

One of my all time favorite groups, I have had probably every recording in one form or another.Someone called them "the thinking man's rock". It's my rock too.

The Who live at Leeds..best played loud. I don't know if Townshend destroyed his guitar there.

I know he and Hendrix destroyed them at Monterey with Jimi setting his on fire with lighter fluid. Eric Burden described the two events as "one being a violent rape and the other as an erotic sacrifice".

Chris Cornell  Best rock singer of the 90's!

I kinda agree, altho you cannot rule out Kurt Cobain (and the huge impact Nirvana/ grunge) had on the early 90's music scene), Mike Patton (Faith No More, Mr Bungle,...) and Al Jourgensen

(Ministry, Revolting Cocks).

Time for some Rock'n'Guzzi

Following Christmas, it's appropriate to mention Cake, as they tie in Moto Guzzi with RocknRoll 'lifestyle' in their song:

And remember Scritti Politti? I hope not. http://www.v11lemans.com/forums/index.php?...st&p=113155

Chris Cornell! What a throat!

Nirvana! The band that made grunge known to the many. Nevermind is a golden one! In Utero, for me was THE epitomy of what was called Grunge. Imagine the music we would still hear if Kurt was alive! What a pitty...

Also another excellent band and one of my favourites were Screaming Trees. Mark Lanegan with his "dark" "bluesy" voice and the Conner brothers with their post-modern-reconstruction of garage-grunge-psychedelic guitar and bass playing (with plenty of Wah-Wah dirty pedals), together with an amazing drum player (Barrett Martin and Mark Pickerel in early years) wrote music that when you hear it you just want to lay down on the beach, under the hot sun, drinking cold beer, smoking a tasty cigarette (dried)...

Focus: Progrock (& Roll)

There is a great series of old programmes about Prog on BBC4, started yesterday. (By a freaky coincidence it was preceded by a programme on the Large Hedron Collider.)

There's just been a clip of Focus' first appearance on BBC tv – and I fondly remember originally seeing it

They've said that following the Old Grey Whistle Test appearance, demand for the album was so high that the record company had to switch their plant's entire production output to the record for 10 days.

Next up: over an hour of ELP on tour in 1973. Overturn the Hammond, let-fly the Moog, unleash the Manticore.
