  1. Thanks for all the spring info.

    Onto the next thing: clip-ons.

    20220131_184241.jpg

Took the weights off the left and right clip-ons; the third weight and clip-on were in the box.  You can imagine how this bike looked with the protuberant appendage growing off (only) the left clip-on :rasta:.  The hollow bolt ("ring nut") with (L) seems to be a #3/4-16 (SAE???).  The weight (R) seems to be an M18-1.0 which fits into the ~5-1/2" recess of the clip-on, which had been buggered up and new threads tapped.  (X) is also apparently M18-1.0, matching the original threads of the clip-on (though that recess is only ~7/8") (sorry I'm not using metric).  Doesn't look like any of this stuff is original equipment.  I know there are one or more threads on handlebar weights I'll review.

  2. Many forums and blogs usually devolve into name-calling and dribble by about the third user post.

v11lemans.com:  51 pages -- just on re-engineering the shift spring -- of collective knowledge, experience, engineering, and comaraderie.  Bravo! :notworthy:

My "talisman spring" is not the re-engineered variety.  Small chance, I thought, that PO had replaced the OEM spring with the re-engineered spring and thought to put the old, but unbroken, spring in the tail as a reserve.  But, it seems that my talisman is unused, so likely that I have the under-wound, over-bent OEM spring inside.  Looks like @Scud had a couple new ones left as of last year, so I'll PM him (better pick one up for the Tenni, too).

Replacement of my spring seems like a good project for the 18th South'n Spine Raid...  @docc ???

    Cheers,

    Frey

Edit: Guess I won't PM @Scud, as "it" tells me he can't be messaged...  My just be that I don't know my way around this corner of the interweb.

  3. Under the seat with some fuses and the tool kit, I found a bit of bubble wrap with a spring inside, subsequently identified as the spring (25) that attaches to the ratchet in the gear selector box.  What do you make of that?  It seems like it would be a bit of a complex roadside fix to replace that spring.  Is that a weak spot?  Does this suggest a past problem or portend failure?

  4. Took the Hepco-Becker side cases off the rack to work on reconditioning them.  I know it's not glamorous work, but I can do this work at my coffee table and not in the 45-50F garage.  So, I bought some snake oil from Advance Auto: Mothers CMX.  It promises to "RESTORE TRIM BETTER THAN NEW".  Here's the result; can you tell the difference?

    20220125_171941.jpg

The one the right is the treated case.  It looks mildly better, but that may be a benefit of having been degreased and rinsed.  Here's the plan view:

    20220125_171854.jpg

As you can see, there's not a dramatic improvement in appearance.   Anybody have experience with a plastic restorer that actually works well?  I don't want some shoe polish that rubs off on everything.

Btw, I found a faux anodizing paint that matches the later style porkchops very well. Just strip the chops, apply self etching primer, then paint with an undercoat of bright silver (smooth, not metallic fleck), apply the special red faux paint, and finish it off with a nice clear coat. PM me if anyone wants more info.

How's the faux anodized finish holding up, chaimerlain?

Hard to tell on the screen but don't think it's a Magni, more screws on the Magni and they were M5 at the front and M6 at the sides

Yeah, the Magni''s holes also aren't equidistant in the pics I've seen, so it's probably not actually Magni (but might fit?). It's quite thin material.

  7. I purchased an '02 Lemans and it came with a couple boxes of stuff.  The P.O. (x2) apparently had several Guzzis, including a Centauro and some sort of V11 EV.  The boxes contained a mish-mash of the parts for (at least) those three bikes.  I want to get rid of that stuff that I don't need for a Lemans.  Most of it I haven't bothered to identify through fiche or otherwise.  I will post a couple pics here.  Happy to answer any questions, take additional pictures, make measurements, etc., if that will help you identify/confirm the piece you're interested in.  I don't feel like spending the time and effort to price items.  You pay shipping.  I'll gladly accept good karma, in-kind, or non-tax-deductable charitable contributions to the "restore the knackered goose fund".

    Items are believed to include:

Centauro clutch cable with rubber lever boot (new)

Centauro clutch cable without boot (new)

    Centauro speedo cable (new)

What appears to be a Magni (or similar, or knock-off) fairing windscreen (pictured below):

  8. So, one of the things I must consider is what to do with this bike:

    1) make sure mechanicals are good and store it for when/if something goes wrong with the Tenni.

    2) rehabilitate it mechanically, but leave it alone cosmetically and have that rat bike I've always wanted.

    3) Spruce her up considerably and really appreciate (per Docc) the monochromatic fireball.

  9. Yesterday I brough home the champagne '02 Lemans of former forum member twhitaker (RIP).  This was a bit of a Covid Times purchase, I think: something to do, not particularly well thought out or investigated, just scratching a wild hair.  Well, at least I didn't resign my job.:huh2:

    Pros:

    • I do actually like the color.  I was afraid it was going to be too close to simlar vintage Toyota Camry old-lady beige.  It isn't.  Maybe more Iron Man gold.  It's tasteful, yet not absolutely boring.  When the snow clears, I'll get a sid-by-side photo of the Tenni and the champagne (I laid a couple stone of salt to clear a narrow path from garage - it's not great motorcycling weather in this neck of the woods).
    • It's a Motto Guzzi V11! :mg:
    • Started up in single digit temperature; sounded okay
    • PO has ridden -- fast! (how fast will remain undisclosed)

    Cons:

Cosmetic damage (mostly what I know at present -- this bike has 44K miles on the clock and it looks like it did every bit of it).

    • This bike went down on its right side at some point.  It buggered up the cylinder head guard -- which did its job rather well

    20220122_170918.jpg

    • Damaged right fairing
    • Bar end was replaced with something dramatically different in size (and presumably mass)
    • Hard cases dented, abraided, and small tears
    • Mufflers mismatched (one painted to be less obviously mismatched)
    • Front wheel rim gouged
    • Front fender abraided
    • Right mirror cup abraided
    • Rear hugger abraided
    • Seat okay but not great
    • Seat cowl scratched
    • Some fuel tank anomoly and also rubbing from throttle friction device when bars at full right lock
    • Some corrosion on fins, master cylinder cover, elsewhere
    • Pork chops' anodized finish peeling badly and otherwise beat up
    • Cylinder head finish bubling
    • Engine case paint isn't perfect, but doesn't seem too bad (I'd welcome a pic of what bad looks like)
    • Basically, bike is pretty filthy

    Mechanical problems

    • Neutral light intermittent failure with concomitant sidestand-triggered engine cut-off, even in neutral
    • judging from presence of oil on final drive outer case, possibly a bad seal
    • Feels like steering lock doesn't engage quite soon enough
    • Oily grime about intake at R cylinder (maybe L, too -- haven't looked that closely)
    • Odometer 60 degree bit held together with a grocery twist tie

    20220122_171015.jpg

    Notable features

    • Highway pegs (Looking forward to trying these, but worried these are actally designed to melt boots)

More to come.  Thanks in advance for helping with the trouble shooting!

    Cheers,

    Frey

  10. Hello, all.

twhitaker's old champagne V11 lemans has arrived at its new home in Happy Valley, Pennsylvania; stable mates with Tenni #112, a G5, and a couple Beemers (the F800GS being the odd duck of the bunch).

Many thanks to Tom Witt who went above and beyond in:

    1) Letting this process drag out over a month while we navigated the holiday season and other priorities

    2) Traveling a couple hours east to deliver the bike to my waiting trailer

    3) Providing extra bits, a brand new, still wrapped front tire and even retrieving a nice set of prok chops he'd already parted with (to a local friend who was apparently willing to part with them himself) to sweeten the deal a bit

It will take me some time figure out what I purchased, and I will start a new thread where I can take advantage of all the knowledge -- and good humor (I'm going to need it -- this bike is pretty rough) -- of the community.:mg:

    Cheers,

    Frey

Won't know until I ride her in April/May when the roads are clear of snow, sand and salt.

I'm holding out hope for a riding day here and there for the next couple months here in the warmer clime of central PA.  Jealous, though, Vtwin, of riding in NH.  Rode the NEBDR last summer and NH had to be the highlight (scenery-wise).  We raced the leading edge of a storm for a few hours and then the skies cleared as we reached Franconia Notch.  Amazing views, and a super stretch of road.

If I still have the handgrip vibration, its bar end mirrors...new grips, then we'll see what's what.

Handlebar accoutrements seem like the obvious easy and inexpensive (hopeful) solution.

Does anyone have experience with tire selection and vibration?  Different kettle of fish altogether, I know, but when I recently swapped out the old Shinko 805s for Bridgestone Battleaxes on the dual sport, I got a whole new appreciation for vibes at the handlebars.  Maybe one of you engineer-types could speak to rubber and resonant frequencies?  Has she been re-shod already?

    Cheers,

    Frey
