I'm curious about the change from the textile pouch to the internal shell. Is the later shell as much of a "monkey paw trap" as the earlier version?

(I once got hold of a couple OMRON High Current Relays in there and friends had to beat me unconscious so I would let go to get my hand out  . .  .  )

I can check for you docc,I have one down in the garage. My plan was to upgrade the bike to the later tail(purely for weight savings) and the later in tank pump tank and get the whole lot painted.Problem is I cant use the later tank now with the Daytona engine as you loose too much steering lock and its reduced already.

Oh and for those interested the in tank pump tanks are 20mm longer from the front mounts to the front of the tank. From the front mounts to the rear mounts is the same. So they extended the front of the tank when they went to the longer frame. I suspect if you fitted the later tank to the earlier frame you would lose some steering lock as well.

Its the base (horse shoe) piece that I'm looking for info on and yes there are differences.

I believe the one I'm after is the early model..( Heavy piece ) that has the bag affair bolted to the rear internal assembly.

    Thx Phil

Yep that's what I'm referring too. I refer to it as a seat cowl just because its just a decorative cowl piece and really has nothing to do with the seat as such. The factory call it a "tail" or "rear fairing" depending on the model, earlier or later.

This is the earlier one you're after up till 2002 by the parts manual.

Image result for guzzi V11 seat fairing

This is the 2002 and onwards.

Im looking for a tail piece that will fit up oem to a 2001 V 11.

I know that I don't want to make a 2003/4/5 fit as there are issues.

Will the Greenie be the same tail piece as the Rosso Mandello?

I need that era of tail piece if so...Griswoia if you have one can you PM pics as well as what you would need for it?

The changeover for the seat cowls was 2002. So you can fit the later type post 2001 to earlier if you have the additional mount rail and the plastic rear compartment as opposed to the plastic bag arrangement.

Got lucky tonight; changing out the camchain tensioner ( yes I'm still tinkering with that  ) as I torqued down the bolts the new, from the hardware store bolt 'gave' more than the other bolts & didn't make the wrench 'click' as quickly as the oem bolts.

Could have been a disaster.

    I'm betting it wasn't a grade 8 bolt.

I guess those are, technically, not links but .pdf that get downloaded and displayed in Adobe Acrobat.

If your build date and VIN are in that sequence, no amount of putzing around will fix it if the recall has not been performed. Pretty sure Piaggio has to reply to your inquiry about the recall status of your V11 if it is in that recall.

Thanks for letting us know! Otherwise, addressing the shifter plate/springs and replacing that flywheel is really good, seasoned advice.

    (Oh! Look at who I get to call "seasoned" :oldgit::oldgit: . . . . ;)  )

I feel seasoned ,that's for sure. If you want to see how to lets say mature with style check out this story on Mal Campbell ( its from 8 years ago but interesting none the less). I caught up with him as usual at the Phillip Island classic last weekend and he's still mighty fast on his RC30 Honda Superbike. I didn't get a chance to get the watch on him but from memory last year he was doing 1:41's and still looks as fast. The quickest he's ever been around PI was in the 1:36's when we did the 98 world supers. So that was 22 years ago on a faster bike, impressive. Don't want to do a disservice to Mal but he's a bit older than me and I'm 61. Love seeing the older racers still getting around quick and he looks totally safe and smooth.

Sounds like the spring on the detente roller either has, or is about to, shit the bed.

Kinda sounds like it Pete but they are usually pretty reliable aren't they?

  7. Get rid of that clutch for starters and pull the selector plate off the gearbox and have a look at the springs. The crunching is a by product of miss selection and too much difference in the relative gear rotational speed.

Bite the bullet and ditch the clutch though, the risk of an exploding flywheel is too great. Its not like when they fail you just get a bit of clutch slip, what you can get is half the engine/gearbox  taken out if it lets go. Then you may as well scrap the entire bike. MG cycle sells a replacement steel single plater.

MGCycle doesn't refer to Valpolini, but these fit the "metal core with coating" description ....

They don't list one for V11 but will these work for V11? http://www.mgcycle.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=170_174&products_id=4634

Possibly they want to unload their paper gaskets first:huh2:Idk.

    Timing cover for V11...

Yes they will fit. My bike has Grisso 2 valve rocker covers. As will the front timing cover gasket which I have also used on my engines both the V11 and the Daytona.

I have some staintunes on there but they are dented badly so need re skinning I like the tone just they look terrible at the moment I have already contacted Cycleworks about getting them fixed so that is an option just thought I’d look about and see what’s around.

You cant reskin Staintunes as they are an all welded SS muffler. Just buy a new one or get the dents pulled out and maybe some weld and grind and polish.

New gaskets are in order. MGcycle has them BUT, wait for someone else to chime in with that type/brand of better gasket. I can't remember it, but I need to get some too.

these are what you need. Don't waste your time with anything else. These metal core/base gaskets are light years ahead of anything else even fancy silicon gaskets thats why modern engines all use them where gaskets are required. May as well take advantage of new technology such as it is them being around for like 20 years.

The kid's ST is a good goer, agile and small, with  forgiving FWD (gets no boost in 1st gear).  In town, I think it can shoot through traffic as good as my Corvette.  The narrow Recaros and some of the glitz inside isn't quite in my generation.

I'd like one of the new mid engined Corvetts. How much is a kidney worth these days.

  13. So I got tired of trying to find a paint match for the Greenie frame. Did a lot of research mainly historical here and on the interweb and anything that was suggested as really good wasnt available here so I went bugger it and got 500ml of 2 pack matched.

My r/h pork chop was faded and polishing it didnt help so I thought now was the time to address it. The main frame isnt too bad and I need to paint the front frame support where I removed the horn and regulator bracket as well.

Here's the result from an automotive paint supply places special machine. The top 10mm where my fingerprint is (doh) is the new paint. Good enough for me. I asked if he could cross reference what the machine came up with to a code or particular car model with the same shade. Unfortunately not.

With the piece in your hand its only the surface finish due to my fingerprint that gives it away, the colour is as close to perfect as you'll get. BTW the guy didnt tell me about the wet area just handed it back to me with the tin of paint. Must be some old paint guys party trick:)

I came across this delightful video of The Goodwood Revival. Something for everyone (even bikes)! Makes me so want a car that just will not idle . . . .

That's the sound of big cams with lots of overlap and high compression, I love that cranky loping idle of an old fashioned performance engine. They sound ANGRY. The other thing they do is they like to rev. Old school worked engines just want to climb onto the cam and rev. Modern engines are better in just about every way imaginable but they seldom give you that hairs standing on end feeling. I'd love to get to Goodwood one day but for now I'll need to be satisfied with the best Post Classic event in the world at Phillip Island this weekend.

Ex AMA multi Superbike Champ Josh hayes and his Wife ex US Supersport Champion Melissa Paris will be racing along with stars from Australia,England,New Zealand. Best part.....everyone gets to wander around the pits and chat to these guys and I get to catch up with some racing friends. looking forward to it.

    Cars, oh yea hears mine.

You mean the front subframe? That might be a puzzle to remove without taking the engine out, but could be possible. I would get the bike vertical with the shop stand, then support the engine with a platform jack. You will need to remove the tank and bunch of other stuff.

You can pull the front subframe with the engine still in. Just support the front of the engine under the sump with the front wheel still on the ground. Undo the cooler mounts and let it hang by the lines and then all the rest of course including fuel tank removal.

OK, so how about a V11 engine retrofit? Sounds easy! :not:

Can't say I've ever seen a Centauro, and I live in a reasonably Guzzi-rich part of the US.

Probably easier than the high cam engine into the V11. Wouldn't look as good though. How about a grisso 8 valver in a Centauro. That might work although the alternator might be an issue.

    Seriously no one...

They only made 410 units out of a total Centauro production run of 1918 world wide so dont expect to be overwhelmed by responses. So now imagine how many of the 410 made it to the USA/Canada.If you do happen to find one just make sure its a really low mileage unit as the high wear engine parts are getting all but impossible to find and if you can get them they are stupid expensive. Of course if you're engineeringly inclined you can do just about anything but even the std stuff like main bearings etc are getting dear.
