Exhaust install (Finished)

Are there any other tips regarding the installation of these Ti pipes. I have them on but they don't seem to sit as nice as what I have seen in some the pictures posted with these pipes.  Maybe I'm not holding my tongue in the right direction.

I have followed the tips Scud has mentioned in another topic, such as don't install the springs and it is difficult to have the pipes terminate symmetrically.  Am I being to picky/anal as how they look?

Use a little copper antiseize on joints.

I fit everything together off the bike to see how far it will allow. Then I mark the joints at the max depth. It helps to know if it's in too far or how much extra wiggle room you have in or out.

Please keep the innuendos to yourselves intelligent and mature lot we are....

Is that not an open invitation for our wittiest and most clever innuendos?

I mean you didn't give us all that much to work with. You only said "joints" twice . . . :rasta: :rasta:

Yes to what Chuck said! I would add that "loosening fasteners" includes head pipes.. just enough to let em slip a bit. Get the entire system to move side to side. If you have a crossover hanger, loosen it too. Just make sure when you tighten up, that the head pipes don't contact the block.

Move it all around till the cans look good. i have the Stucci Xover and I had a hell of a time getting it right. I ended up shimming the left side outward with a 10mm spacing washer, placed where the strap hangs. Tightened up from the back forward, they stayed where I wanted them.

Thanks everybody for the suggestions.  Never thought about loosening the crossover,  head pipes, or using a little copper antiseize.  I just put the exhaust together without tightening it up but wasn't getting good results.

I will give it another try tomorrow.

Docc, I think that was an open invitation to some clever innuendos!

I remember Pete Roper talking about "grooming" the exhaust or "de-stressing" it. (can't remember his exact words, as his level of expression is beyond my mortal capabilities   :o ).

But, as I recall, loosen every single fastener in the exhaust, then bump, and snug, and tighten in a *star* pattern until the system is where you want it and there is minimal stress on the header pipes at the exhaust ports.

Remember, most Guzzi exhaust are *offset* to the right a bit for the drive line.

Makes sense.  Like I said, tomorrow I will loosen all exhaust fasteners and go from there.  Today after trying to make it fit properly and not getting close to how I wanted it to look, I thought I should take a break and go on the board and find out how the rest of you performed this delicate operation. :luigi:

This is why I think this board/forum is like one big happy family the way everyone helps out.  Gotta love it.

This is as high and tight as I could get it without using any innuendo.

Look how far the end of the swingarm is from the tire on the right, compared to the left. The Guzzi definitely hangs to the right.

Thanks Scud for the picture, that's how mine kinda looked when I was trying to install them. But like you and docc say the Guzzi seems to hang to the right. Also I didn't realize they should tuck up that tight.

Tomorrow will be a better day for getting these pipes on.

Yours is tighter than mine scud!   Also BBlock, using the stock crossover, I think, should make it a bit easier. I had to cut the left side rear of my Stucci 1/2" b/c they welded it funny and it was longer, making it stick out further.

Not for sure, but I don't think the Ti hangers (1100Spot) are wider on the right like the Sport LM's.

I'm not sure they're "supposed" to be that tight, but I like 'em like Bob Seger says... "way up firm and high" (no innuendo at all).

It took me a few attempts, I think I finally got it when all parts were loose, then, like footgoose said, I snugged up the exhaust hangers first and worked to the heads. After getting it all snug (but not tight) I could still move it a little - then to final tightening.
