2017 Ducati Supersport S 939 $11,500

I was given the go-ahead to list this on the forum.   

I'm reluctantly selling my lovely Ducati to make room for the BMW R1200RS I just acquired for longer tours.  The S model includes fully adjustable Ohlins suspension, Quick Shifter, and Rear Seat Cowl.  Perfect bike for sport touring or occasional track days.  Bike has 15,925 miles on the clock.

Over $5,000 invested in accessories:

  • Ducati Side cases - $1600 (yes, ridiculous price)

  • SC Project titanium exhaust with carbon fiber cover - $1030

  • EBC front brake rotors and pads

  • Rare Ilmberger carbon fiber Bellypan 

  • Motocomposites carbon fiber timing belt covers, air duct covers, inner side panels, sprocket cover, chain guard, Instrument cover, rear hugger 

  • MRA smoke spoiler windshield  and CalScience Touring windshield included

I purchased it a couple years ago from Touring Sport Ducati in Greenville, SC.  I'm the second owner.  It's been meticulously maintained by adult riders in their 50s - never been tracked.  I have most service records.  Only fully synthetic 4T oil has been used. The Recall CR213 for the rear brake line has been performed by a Ducati dealer.  Always garaged and kept on a battery tend.  Tires are Dunlop Roadsmart III and only have about 1000 miles on them,   New X-ring chain was installed less than a year ago.  Both factory immobilizer keys and Owner's Manual included.  Lightweight and very quick - a lot of fun to ride!

Good luck with the sale.  I saw you ad in the Ducati Supersport forum.  I recently rode an RS and considered one to be a tourer as well.
Thank you LowRyter. I figured you would probably see it on the other forum. Tough decision to sell the lovely Duc, but the RS will be great for some 10 day 2500 mile tours my buddies and I have been planning. I can always buy another Supersport in the future if I miss it too much.

I've been looking at this model off-and-on for a few years.

Since both of you ( @LowRyter @4corsa ) own and have experience with the SS, would you mind offering a bit brief of feedback from a sport-touring perspective?

Things like comfort over several hours or a day-long ride, range, reliability, etc?

Sure thing. I really wish I didn't have to sell it, but only have room for 3 bikes. Ducati did a very good job with the new Supersport generation - the S model performs and handles extremely well.
I've taken it mostly on 3-day weekend trips, but I did do one 7-day 1600 mile long tour of Maryland, WV, Kentucky. It was a real pleasure in the mountain twisties of WV! But I would say that trip (for me in my late 50s) was the limit of what I would do on this bike. The bars are relatively high and close, so seating is semi-upright, so that's not a problem. Also, mine has the comfort seat, which is nice for longer trips. The stock windshield doesn't offer much protection, so I've tried 2 others and finally think the CalSci is pretty good (all 3 shields included). If I had to pick one niggle, it would be that the mirrors vibrate a bit. You don't feel it much in the grips, but even the Ducati mirror recall didn't fully fix the problem. It wouldn't be a deal breaker, but everything else is so well done, you sometimes notice it. One thing for sure, IMHO, it's by far the best looking sport touring bike on the road.

...just to add - the range of a full tank of gas is around 170 miles. I found it comfortable to go that distance without stopping in between.

Agree with all said except I've never gotten the courage to go more than 160 miles on a tank.  I've somewhat tamed mirror vibration with some vibration pads. I find the windshield ok, and the stock seat the best I've ever had on a bike.  It's more comfortable than the Guzzi, better seating and little more relaxed.  It's light and tossable but I can lock the throttle and take both hands off the bars and wave like Miss America.  And that's rub, no cruise control.  

The only mods I've done to my bike is a throttle lock, Duc tankbag, 3/4 in bar risers, factory foldable levers ($20 on closeout, regular $360- <Guzzi Content>) and 14T front sprocket (it's a little over geared).   Mine's a standard bike (no Ohlins), with bag package.  It's the best bike I've ever owned, I have 26k miles.

Frankly Al, I'd make a deal on this one, if you're interested in one.  OTOH, it's due 16K desmo service.  The labor isn't bad but shop got me for the belts and plugs, I got hosed on that.  

We've also got a forum on these bikes.

I'm not in the market right now for another motorcycle, at least certainly not until I get the one I have back on the road ^_^

 

We're actually trying to downsize on vehicles a bit, so I'd get killed if I brought home another $12k motorcycle, plus my wife doesn't like red vehicles so it would have to be the white version anyway ;)

 

But this is good information to have perhaps for a future opportunity :bike:

 

How are the handlbar vibes on long rides?  Numbness inducing, or ok?

 

Out of curiosity, what does the desmo service generally cost?

Incidentally, the Desmo Service is at 18k miles (30,000 km), not 16k miles, according to my manual. Since I change my own oil/filter, my Ducati Service guy told me the Desmo Service would be around $900.

To be fair, that is 18k miles.  Unless someone is commuting daily, or is a consistent long-distance tourer, it might take years to accumulate that mileage.  So in that sense, in today's realities of maintenance costs, perhaps it isn't so bad.

You can't hardly get your car out of a shop for less than $1000 these days for anything beyond simple maintenance.

We just spent almost $1000 on a new ignition switch replacement for the Saab :blink:  ...that's after I've replaced it once myself, and rebuilt it too.

A bloke here once mentioned that 30,000 km. Ducati service. He runs a shop here specialising in the small block Guzzis, but he does everything. He said that one finds rather a lot of Ducatis with about that mileage (kilometreage is such a clumsy word....) up for sale second hand. The reason is that service: young blokes buy the things on credit, can just manage the payments, and then all of a sudden there is this monster service bill coming up. :huh2:

 

But what Al wrote is true: my last service on the Opel Astra was upwards of €600,-. Last year I had the brakes renewed, that was more like €1,500,- . What can I expect? The thing has about 160,000 km on it. Things wear out.

 

But a thousand bucks for an ignition switch is a really big call.... :(
