Ok, the old dawg watched it and it was just what I expected. No good ones, and the die is already broken. For the time it took, I could have made metal dies on the mill.

    Edit:

Look, I'm not knocking 3D printing. I use some printed stuff in the shop daily.. but what he is trying to do here is beyond the capability of plastic.

Which was the point of the video, to stress test the plastic. Not to optimize the process.

Cheesehead is Rick. He and Gordon are MG Cycles. Good guys.

No I didn't watch the video. :) I'm also an engineering modelmaker and I've made 100s if not thousands of prototype parts. I'm aware of what temporary tooling can and can't do. .048" stainless in that part? I'd be surprised if you got one "good" one. :huh2:

Maybe watch it and see if an old dog can learn something new.

Just buy one from Cheesehead and Gordon at MGC and be done with it..:oldgit::grin:

And from the video.. 3D printed sheet metal dies.. will it survive?

No. No it won't. Trust me, I apprenticed as a sheet metal diemaker.

Did you actually watch the video? Remember a die only needs to survive as long as your production is. If you are making dozen units do you want to over-invest in dies? If you are making 10k then no, they will not last.

While I could just get the stock one I think we've proven that the stock part isn't always the best.

Looks meh. But better than stock. I'd buy one. 😉

This was just my first draft and no it doesn't look great. It's flimsy but it works. I'd like to see what else people have done.

That's funny. And you're correct that the part is in front of the pegs, not behind. My bad.

However, I'd still be a little concerned about the sheet metal.

You should be way more concerned about that cast metal side stand. Neither the sheet metal or bent wire will do much to you.

  6. 2021 OVM Corvallis Poster.jpeg

So I have been waiting and this is the perfect year, Italian bikes will be featured and lo and behold by Greenie is vintage eligible. The OVM has a 20 year old rule! It's going to freak out some of the old guys to see such a modern looking bike. It will be worth the $20.

    Stay tuned for more news.

My friend George is building the Ducati on the poster (yeah, he made the poster so he gets to pick the bike on the poster too...) and it looks spectacular. Normally there aren't a lot of Italian bikes so hopefully a few turn up.

Here's a video from the last time I went. Of course I couldn't show the bike then. But now I can!

I don't think I would buy a pressed metal plate. I am not a big fan of having a sheet metal blade by my left Achilles tendon. Even though I almost always wear good boots. I'd rather have something that would bend or break.

How is this near your achilles? Do you have highway pegs on your V11?

  8. Not the orange drink, the wire thing that sticks out and breaks. Or at least mine did.

So I whipped up a prototype. It's probably too thin but I'll see how long it lasts.

Wow. That’s motorbike heaven. And a Vincent, too! I wonder, is the Vincent a daily rider? How’d you get the aerial shot?

If you can afford a Egli Black Shadow you don't daily drive. You ride whenever you want to.

Aerial shots courtesy of a DJI Mavic Air 2.

Speaking of aerial view, the video link I posted in Adv Bikes shows some intriguing drone shots of 2 riders with no assistance, riding in some great scenery. Can a drone be programmed to follow the operator?

They can but it's more likely there was an operator you can't see. Link to the video?

  11. Ok, I know it's a Norton video but when was the last time you saw two V11 Sports in one video? Colin has a great Scura. Bought it new from Moto International. Last time I checked it had 60k miles on the original clutch.

For an added bonus there's an 850 LeMans too.

And how many of you know what an Egli is?

  12. Somehow they managed to hold The One Show this year despite all of the restrictions. Limited crowds just meant you had more room to look at bikes.

My brother and I were analyzing the Cafe Sport and got to talk to the owner. He lives south of Portland (I have a feeling there were more local bikes than usual this year). He said the bike was quite corroded when he got it (I assume it came from the coast) and he took it apart. Well, he did a damn fine job putting it back together. I need to find an abandoned Cafe Sport just to steal the suspension off it. I hope he sees this post and provides more details.

I'll post a few photos and then provide a link to the photo dump.

really nice to see Dave. Nice chap filming and talking.  Good Spring event, we all need one of those. The "other" black Norton was quite nice.

    keep 'em coming

Mike does an incredible job putting out the videos. There is a wide variety of bikes presented so if you like interesting motorcycles you should subscribe. I can guarantee more Guzzi content.
