I noticed when I arrived in Ulster that I had some oil on the right hand side of my rear wheel- nothing to write home about, but after a few hours at 80mph on the way home, the leak had got a little worse and there was some on the edge of the tyre. There was no flood of oil dripping down from the box, but just a small stain indicating a small leak.
All the bolts are tight, and I don't think it is the breather so I am guessing I may need to replace the seal(s), a job which I have never had to do before.
Looking at the parts manual there are two seals, part numbers 90403850 and 90706958.
Am I likely to need to replace both seals? Do I need any special tools for the job?
Any advice much appreciated.
Cheers
Guy
Its not a terrible job (unless the leak is from the pinion seal) as you should not need to remove the pinion gear ( a real pain).
and here (the tread I posted pics in)
Seals for bevel box are...(prices are 3 years old)
BRTS70X85X8 OIL SEAL £1.64 +VAT
BRTS32X52X7 OIL SEAL £1.03 +VAT
BRTS37X55X8 OIL SEAL £1.64 +VAT
BS163 O RING £0.50 +VAT
from reading the thread it looks like I found one seal size to be wrong (38x50x7 instead of a 37x55x6 ) but as thats not on the list I'm not sure if there is another seal ?
I have a bearing puller if you need it (I can't remember) just PM me.

Someone here said that the starter was the same as a Fiat Cinquecento /Seicento, I've been meaning to take the starter off my Cinq to see if its true but there are plenty in breakers if you have chance to check it out.(there are 2 types of engine 900cc and 1100cc so maybe 2 types of starter !)
I can confirm that the starter off the 1100 Cinquecento (FIRE Engine)is not the same as ours, even the solenoid is different.
The 900 Cinq or old type Panda may be the same as ours but I can't yet confirm this...yet

Hey, what can I say?
I'm not the author of this procedure, I'm just passing on information and asking if there's any equivalent mumbo-jumbo that applies to MG V11's.
Search on "reset" in the R1150R site and tell them they're FOS.
I'm just trying to find all the hidden, DaVinci secret handshakes that keep these things running.
So...can I simply disconnect and reconnect my battery without fear of waterboarding the ECU?
No problem with disconnecting power to the early type ECU but I'm not sure about the later bikes with a Lambda probe, I think at worst it would have to re-learn your riding style but i'm pretty sure they only have a lambda because they have a catalytic convertor ?

I don't bother doing it that way. On all engines the valve clearance is measured with the piston at TDC. It doesn't matter much if it is plus or minus 10 degrees.
What I do is take out the spark plugs and move the engine by pushing the bike back and forwards in gear. I think that it muche easier than what you did. I feel for top dead center by sticking a screwdriver in the spark plug hole, and checking that both valves are closed. I set my valves a .005 and .008, because that is the way it was when I got it and it runs well that way.

+1 but I'd use a plastic drinking straw or maybe a long matchstick rather than screwdriver just in case !!!

Hi Jaap
When you are near Louth you could stop at the famous Cadwell Park circuit- there may well be a track day there to watch.
Kingston upon Hull is not the most prettiest of cities- maybe worth avoiding unless you have a special reason to go there. There are nicer more rural places not far away if you would prefer that as an overnight stay.
In the Dales, you could head for Hawes for lunch at the cafe there, then onto Ribblehead, and maybe via Dent to Kendal.
See you at Ken Bridge- and give us a shout if you want to stay in Huddersfield one night.
Regards
Guy
+1 for Cadwell, the Cafe in Hawes and avoiding Hull !!
Plenty to see in York so I'd stay overnight there instead.

Disconnected clock this spring.
Crank speed/inertia is the reason I`ve asked if the MyECU had Revolutions w/o firing at starting as option. A rev or two w/o ignition would help starting.
Thx f 907 story, pasotibbs, how are your kickback problem now?
I went to the bike yesterday and even with a low battery it started without a kickback(in fact it started several times as I was too slow with the fast idle).
I charged the battery overnight and as I'm not at work today decided to warm both bikes up, again no problem in fact almost
better at starting than the Paso !!!!
Don't know why but it seems cured

Working hard in garage, contemplating/appreciating all efforts. Some progress today, will get back when decent results.
All switches are off, that is all switches are down to the 1-2-3-4-side.
I`ve had the first (O2-switch) on before today, is that correct (I want open loop)?
Battery is getting tired fr all these efforts, I`ll be back w results incl a fresh battery.
Thx all f chiming in!
My friends 907 used to kick back against the sprag clutch so hard he had to replace it every 2 years .
His bike was standard (as far as we knew) and would often kick back and stall while cold if the fast idle wasn't fully on !!
The starting problem he had was probably because he left the bike stood for long periods and as you know the clock on Paso's will drain the battery, I think the crank speed was then too slow for the ign timing that was being used.
It may be that the starting problem and stalling while cold may have been related to a map issue,in fact another 907 owner advised him to try a different map(a new EPROM if I remember correctly ) as he claimed to have had the same issues cured by this, but the battery would seem most likely .
Charge or replace the battery, the problem is most likely due to that.

So I've been riding the V11 on and off, putting about 150 miles on it. It's been really great! Several times I rode it back to back with the Speedfour, and it's hard to tell while riding that the Guzzi is almost 100lb heavier (according to specs). The V11 handles really well.
The last time I rode, I rode the V11 for 45 minutes or so, then hopped on the Speedfour immediately after. It actually took me about 10 minutes to adjust to the way the Triumph rides. haha...
One thing I do hope to change about the V11 is how buzzy the handlebars are. The previous owner mentioned that adding heavier bar-end weights would help. Another thing I'm still getting used to is that the throttle on-off feels very abrupt. It takes a lot more care in the right wrist, as well as some clutch play to keep things smooth for me. Am i doing something wrong?
I keep wondering about the steering damper too. I wanted to know if it was active, and see if I could change the setting. Without a manual, I didn't want to mess things up (as the bike feels fine now). Can anyone enlighten me as to how to adjust the steering damper?
Thanks!
The on/off nature of the throttle at low speed has been looked at before here (post 10), I made one out of 5mm alloy and must admit I'd forgotten about it so it must work

Keeping track of changes - maybe for the "manual" or FAQs
I am sure the veterans know this, but there are novices as well.
In the XXX.ecu file lines that start with # are notes/comments in the file and not used by the ECU.
This means you can add notes to the file on what change etc. you did. I have started deleting many original lines with # as I do not need these notes anymore. I don't know what file size the EEPROM can store, which is why I delete stuff I know, to leave space for my WIP - work in progress notes. This way I do not have to find the bit of paper that I wrote on about what I changed for the particular map.
Richard
Good idea, if it works
I date or name my maps (ie after xx changed.ecu) and keep them in a couple of locations, that way I can find them quickly if I need to.
Running closed loop means the map I started a ride with may not be the one I return with so I tend to save the map before and after a ride(before ride to x.ecu, after ride to x.ecu) to compare the changes.

Well, TDC Cranking=0 is really smooth f me as f Punch, maybe a Duc thing (+pasotibbs... )
Default being 1 is a mistake as I see it, easy to overlook and you work w the table f no use when it is not enabled.
Yes, I could have read the manual better but still think 0 default is more customer friendly.
Some garage inj timing tests tonight:
Set at 300, good/fast response at lower RPM/TPS.
But, 300 at row 600 starting RPM, kickbacks, 517 smooth start again.
Btw, pasotibbs, are you a Paso owner?
17" Astralites, Dell'orto Carb conversion, CBX750 headlights...

As per last post - new to MyECU.
I assembled it in January and tried it out and it was hard to start and ran like a pig! Had a big trip to Philip Island for WSBK then catch up on work so did little.
being of a technical background I decided that if you can measure something, you know what to change, so I bought an Innovate Motorsport LC-1 This was my best decision (after MyECU)
Ran the bike with the original ECU and measured AFR - mostly 10 to 11, far too rich, but it goes well. Put in My15M with Cliff's V11 Breva map - same AFR.
Used global adjust from 1101 rpm to max to lean off by 10% as a starter. Ran well but hard to start even after seriously reducing injector duration at 1100 rpm. Had an email from Greenmonster regarding TDCwhilecranking - did as GM recommended and set it to 0 (fire from map, not TDC) - it starts like a dream - thankyou!!!
I also found that setting the TDCwhilecranking to 0 solved my starting issues but I also altered the enrichment and timing values as well.
My map is posted a few posts above so you may want to compare, Raz posted a map from a 1100Sporti a few pages ago that had the targets narrowed
(as you are doing) to improve mileage so you may learn something from the work done there ?
Starting on mine is now a matter of spinning the motor over and opening the throttle until it fires, then setting the fast idle to stop it stalling, there may still be work to be done but I haven't had a kick back since making the changes (and they where BIG kickbacks ,a couple of times so loud and violent I thought a rod must have made a bid for freedom !!)
Glad its not just me that had this issue !!!(maybe its fuel quality that varies between countries ?)

I've PM'd Cliff with this, I may be missing something but I've just noticed there seems to be a big difference between the throttle position and the area of map actually being used ?(could explain a lot !!)
I hit the top row of the map at approx half throttle which seems wrong to me !!
like I say it may be I'm missing something or have screwed up my map somehow?
I actually managed to get out on the bike yesterday and after a few miles on autotune it was running really well, not perfect but the best yet !!

Cliff's reply
"Yes that's normal and is a result of the way the throttle pump emulation works. It only works as expected when the engine is running."
That explains it, I'd not noticed it before but thought it was probably worth mentioning here as others will no doubt find it useful to know.

Almost certainly normal Guzzi sound (clutch, gearbox etc), I was always under the impression that worn big ends got "vocal" at max torque rather than idle (unless the oil light comes on that is !!)If it was a car I'd would expect a big end knock to show up initially on a cold start with it going quiet when the oil pressure built up and for it to return when the oil was hot at max torque RPM ?
If a previous owner has allowed the oil light to come on whilst riding (low oil level, harsh acceleration etc) then they could be failing but they'd have to be really bad to drown out the other Guzzi sounds
It may be a bad idea (others will advise I'm sure)but I'd be tempted to warm the engine up then with the engine at idle put the bike in gear and with a brake applied use the clutch to slowly load up the motor, the idle speed will come down (reducing oil pressure) and the load on the bearings will go up, if the oil light comes on or the knock gets worse then you were right if it goes away or reduces we were .
just don't do it for long !!!

Brilliant. I'll probably order the second option from Pasotibbs suggestion.
The DB Dawg looked special, but it might not be as effective, perhaps?
They give a weird "fluttery" exhaust note most noticeable on the over run (I quite like it) , and certainly take the edge off the noise!!
I drilled 4 holes 90 degrees apart at the inner end and threaded them to take small bolts to stop the baffle moving off centre when fixed in place( I welded the ends of the bolts together when I had them in the right position so they could not move)

Is that rear end/light configuration standard for any particular model? I'm going to admit im an avid modder and was thinking of useing something like the fleda system but I love the intergration in those rear end lights.
I suspect I will be trucking the bike down at a quoted cost of $450 door to door. My wife veto'ed the ride back, and hell she's too good to me for me to bother making an argument out of it
This deal is getting very close.

One of my best friends when I was a young man had a good friend of Dutch descent. I didn't know until much later that his father was one of the successful escapes from Colditz Castle. This is where the baddest of the bad (Ahem- like Douglas Bader - of one leg fame -he is so bad! - shitty goalie that he was = not!) were interred. He actually made it from East Germany to Holland and survived the war. He was also an incredibly good man - don't know how to put it into words but he was so proud of anything us young lads did that was forward thinking.
Anyways - TV is cool and I will always love it but reality is so much cooler than anything else!!
Douglas Bader actually had two false legs.
I read somewhere that people are still finding hidden escape kits in Colditz Castle!
Isn't Colditz where they built a glider in the attic ?
If I remember the story correctly when the POW's were liberated by the Allies (Americans ?) they begged them to let them try it out, to see if it would actually fly but were not allowed ?

In Sweden they are put everywhere except where they would do any good (like outside schools). The govt really considered having the system calculate your speed between two cameras too but they decided not to, for now...
In the UK cameras are supposed to be sighted on roads that have had fatal accidents, but what happens is they seem to sight them anywhere on the road rather than near the scene. Near to where I live a pedestrian was killed on a crossing (the car ran the red) so we now have a speed camera van parked at the complete opposite end of the road (1 mile away) trying to catch cars speeding up hill (I assume because most people attack the hill slightly faster than the limit ?) rather than the straight gradual decent to the crossing/junction where the fatality occured.
We also have speed bumps (or speed cushions as they prefer to call them )everywhere now (18 on the first mile of my way to work, its so bad the windscreen on my car has started to crack!!!)but all this means is that small cars have to slow down but big 4x4's and vans (the vehicles most likely to kill a pedestrian) can take them at 40+ without even backing off so now they overtake cars that have slowed down for the bumps- much safer than when everyone was doing 30-35

You should try
TDCWhileCranking=1
if you haven't already.
When did you get your My15M? There have been some improvements made to improve low battery conditions. Some may apply to yours.
I've just changed the TDC setting to off recently to see what effect it had having noticed that the 1100 Sporti map that Raz posted was set up this way(I'm also using the injection and timing values),I need to let the battery discharge a little to be sure but it did seem better, but I suspect as the battery was fully charged it may not be the case.
I've had the ECU approx 2yrs so I assume its reasonably up to date?
-
I've had kick back with mine from day one, if the battery isn't 100% I can't start the bike, but it starts fine with the old ECU !
I tried changing the Advance values etc with some success but I've not found a complete cure...yet
I suspect it may be as much to do with the cold start enrichment as anything but finding the solution is proving difficult, I suspect the 500 and 1000 columns may need attention, I'm using the injection and timing values from the 1100 sporti map that Raz posted and so far starting does appear improved but we'll see....
This is the map currently on my bike.

John, did you know they only bulldozed the Panther factory building a few weeks back in Clecky?
I know Scotts were built in Saltaire- do you know if the original building in still standing?
I just got a book on classic british bikes and cars (birthday present) and was by chance reading about the Panther last night, I didn't realise that production only stopped because they couldn't get a couple of the components anymore (I assume because the rest of the british bike industry and the supply companies had gone).
Years ago I was told a story(by the riders grandson) about a Scott owner who used to take his dog with him on rides balanced on the tank, one day it started to rain and the bike lost power and died only to restart easily after the rider and passenger had got off. This happened several times more until the rider heard a hiss of air as the dog jumped off and realised that the dogs wet paw was sealing the air hole in the fuel cap !!
Those springs keep on breaking

Replaced mine on Monday, it was still ok but as I had a new one I thought it was better to do it now !!
I'm glad I did it as the boss was 16mm and the old spring had a greater range of motion than the new, I filed the boss down to 15mm and fitted the new spring.
