That front yoke is not easy to see/assess within the front guard and ahead of the swingarm, but a bright light a close look should reveal if the yoke or uni-joint have gone awry.

With the left side shift plate off, any fractured sliding dogs/"hoses" should be detectable peering in with a bright light whilst rocking the gearbox back and forth with the rear wheel.

A flywheel failure, or clutch plate failure, would only be visible with the clutch removed from the flywheel "basket."

Then, there is the matter of finding the New Zealander with the proper "special tools" . . .

Took some photos of front universal using smart phone & Endoscopy camera. Not that conclusive. Couldn't load other photos. See my gallery.

Mission for today - put rear wheel back in to check movement in gearbox - shift bike to better working position in workshop - get back wheel & swingarm out

@cash1000, visual inspection of the front driveshaft yoke shows it, and its fasteners, to be intact and unaffected?

I ask because mine changed abruptly one day (and finding the fault here would preclude removing the gearbox) . . .

I'm hoping cause is something like your photo. Plan is to gather as much info as possible before I start dismantling i.e how I'm going to support bike: how to remove gearbox: who can repair gearbox if I can't

  3. Hi I think I have a gearbox problem.

Went for a ride with brother yesterday. Got 20ks down the road and noticed a metallic noise coming from 2001 V11 RM. Stopped had a listen noise had gone away. Road another 100m noise came back. Stopped thinking this isn’t good. Tried to push V11 off on to road verge but couldn’t because back wheel had locked up. It took 2 off us to do it. I was still able to change gear but V11 wouldn’t move forward. Went home on brothers' bike (Yamaha MT09 not for me) and got car & trailer.  Got V11 home (Not easy loading a bike with a locked up back wheel). Checked back wheel not binding on swing arm or rear brake binding on disk. Nope. Then took back wheel out thinking diff might have locked up. Nope still moving freely. Then took selector plate off left hand side of gearbox. No sign of damage. Springs on plate still intact. I was still able to run through gears on plate. In retrospect I knew this because I could still change gear but it crossed 1 possibility off the list

Checked driveshaft out of right-hand rear of gearbox. I was not able to turn it. Gearbox is in neutral. I think this is what is causing back wheel to lockup.

    What has happened?

Only work I’ve done on V11 recently is replace Cam Sensor (Thanks MartyNZ for loaning me your spare) so unlikely to be anything to do with that

Some early axles thread into the left fork leg, others are "nutted" on the left fork.

    Yours?

Yes RM front axles are threaded. Tool kit should contain a short length of allen key you can use with a spanner to undo axle

Found this on ebay. In NZ of all places.

Bought it, 12x18, $30 shipped. I wish they sold a larger size :( I have a big wall

Who else thinks these were prettier than the V11? Minus the colostomy bag.

Only good thinks come from NZ :)

  6. I have one fitted to my RM. Got out of the USA a few years ago. It is differcult to use. I've put my back out several times trying to heave bike onto stand. They is no way to rock the bike on to the stand. The idea of using a 6 x 2 gets around that. Also they only fit 2000 & 2001 bikes. Its been a few years since I fitted mine but what I can remember is you need to remove the mufflers then you mount stand to the side plates. The outer ends of the red part of the stand fit to the outside of the plates.
