  1. Did you watch the movie "The accidental Tourist" with William Hurt? in this movie, he tells that packing is an art that comes from experience, and this is where "less is invariably more" came from, when it comes to packing for travel.

    When I traveled with my motorbike, the 70's, I had a tank bag, and carried another bag on the back end of my bike, where a passenger would have sat. Most of my travel was week-ends to go to the races around Europe. In these days, I carried a two spots tent.

    As I am exhausting the Tour du Texas stops around me, I am going to need to overnight somewhere, and bundle stops together.

    I only want to carry the strict necessary, and go with only what can fit in the small bag at the back of my bike (see the video herewith). I think I would only spend maximum two nights, so I can get by with nothing but the indispensable. Clothing, my riding gear will be on me, socks and shorts won't take much space, jerseys neither.

    What will take the most space are the compulsory accessories, mainly the stuff to charge all these batteries. Because they are all different; AirBag, Phone, Camera, Video Camera, Helmet Bluetooth. The Airbag, Camera, Video Camera all have dedicated chargers with their own cords. The Phone has a lightning connector; the Helmet audio, a micro USB port.

    I am not considering my phone to take pictures or make videos.

    Anything I may need on the road, I would buy.

    What do you guys pack on short trips? what do you favor to carry the stuff? any of you carry a back pack while riding?

    I finally got some good vented dirt bike pants that are light grey - reflecting the heat make a big difference compared to the black pair I settled on before (due to availability).

    I have a Bright yellow mesh jacket, that still has a lot of black on it... and I can feel the difference on the black parts vs the yellow parts. WTF? Why is it so hard to find other than black?  And for the record, I know it can be found... but it's uncommon. Seems like if staying cool is the goal, somebody would say, "Why are we making all this black mesh stuff? What about some light colors?"

    OK end of rant. But part of staying cool is: try to wear lighter colors.

    I had the same thought when I was looking to purchase a helmet.

    I wanted a Shark, Carbon Fiber, and all they offered was.... black! unless I purchased a Jorge Lorenzo repro.

    I wear a fire red jacket, and if I could I would have red pants and red boots and a red helmet. Just because my Le Mans is Red. I need to stand out on the road, so people texting and driving can at least think: what's that red thing in the middle of the road....

  3. I concur with all those who have experience with high temps and high humidity.

    I have workrf in the Libyan desert, in Saudi Arabia, in Chad where temperatures are higher than what we have here, but when its dry, it is bearable if we could compare working with riding a motorcycle wearing protective gear. Well working you wear PPE, but excepted for flame retardant textile, you are more or less fine.

    I don't think there is any solution just yet. All that we have revolves around mitigating the heat, but we don't have much in terms of riding in "good" conditions.

    Hydrating does not last long. And if you start making stops to refresh, you end up stopping at every gas station to cool down.

    Not withstanding that when you get to your destination, the first requirement is to change clothes and take a shower...

    Correct. I read it too. But this is moot in that the Moto Guzzi Daytona RS has an exemption to be imported, independently of the 25 years. It is in the list of those "non-conformance" motorbikes that can be imported.

    In any case, the bike being from 1996, the first box of the HS7 can be ticked.

    Chuck stated how Will came into possesion of the map early in the thread and it speaks volumes (to me anyway),

    I have one now installed in my HiCam and think it's an improvement in overall engine response and behaviour.

    I cannot give you specifics, but I think @Lucky Phil has actually looked at the map, so he might be able to provide some detail on the inner workings of what was changed in Will's map

    I honestly can't make much out of "wrong chip". Going on a limb, "wrong chip" may mean released incorrectly programmed EPROMs. Will got replacement EPROMs with the correct EFI program for whatever bikes they were supposed to work.

    Yesterday, a lady on a scooter wearing shorts, and a bare mid-riff shirt cut right in front of me without looking. She had beautiful legs, it would have been a shame to ruin them. I wear these reinforced jeans with protections at the knees and hips, and they are extremely uncomfortable in the current weather. I have been obligated to wear PPE for my own good before, so I am soldiering on.

    About going commando, as long as you are wearing pants over, why not.....

    I see Richard Hammond, Top Gear guy was auctioning off his tonti LeMans.  Lots of cool bikes out there.

    For the time being, I am going to concentrate on riding my humble Le Mans. Once I am satiated with it, providing it is even possible, I may get her a sister.

    That Daytona RS is that kind, and if I had the means, I would not let it slip away...

  8. Absolutely! I am into used clothes too. Too much spoiling. But so far, the picking has been very limited. Not much of a choice for used motorcycle jackets with protections.

    I found a used one on Ebay for $60, size 46. Is this corresponds to an XL? I am normally L, but since I wear my TechAir 5 underneath, I have to wear larger than my fit, to allow for deployment.

    In terms of undergarments, I used to do Inline skating marathons, so I still own a lot of sweat dispensing technical stuff for the upper body. I use that underneath. It passes out the moisture, but when you wear something that prevents it from evaporating, it does not work that well.

    Is there any way to get an insight on what the new firmware improves on, from the stock one? adding more points? interpolated?

    I do not know who is Will Creeton; I imagine he has computer skills, and an Eprom programmer tool. Do we have any information on what he changed to improve the EFI, and he got the source data on which he based the changes?

    I have read whatever material I found on the "Creeton chip", but not much about the reason why it improves the fuel injection;

    Apparently, only 34 were ever imported in the US. I saw this one sold possibly as soon as posted. So, chances to find another one here in the US would be minimal.

    If I had the cash, I would probably seriously think about importing the one I found in Italy. Unlike the one sold by raresportsbike, it is completely original.

    As for maintenance, I suppose replacing the specific Daytona parts could be an issue. With only 308 bikes manufactured during the two years if the source is accurate; this is almost a collector.

    Vented jackets above 90F work worse than unvented jackets....you're just frying from the blow dryer effect.

    Drink, drink and drink more...as they say...if you're not peeing, you're dehydrated!  

    Riding here in Texas is perfectly safe if you follow the above...but the heat stroke is real and can catch you...seen plenty of folks passed out under the shade of a tree for lack of hydration.

    With the enlarging prostate, even if you are dehydrated, you still need to pee.... lol....

    I also wear an airbag jacket underneath my Icon jacket, and that does not help... but safety first....

    EDIT: It is entirely possible that one may have to register the vehicle in an "easy" state, such as Oregon or Alabama, before titling it in Texas. That may require a "trusted" friend who would temporarily place it in his name before transferring to you. However, at each exchange, the taxman loometh.

    Shipping it to the USA would be about $2000 in today's market. And that's groupage;

    Then you pay the import duty and you need to get it registered.

    I had that thought about your comment on "easy" states. Once it has been registered in US, it is a lot easier to do a title transfer.

    As for Texas DMV's guidelines, they state that your vehicle needs first to comply to the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards as per National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) before you even attempt anything else.

    I checked the list of the nonconforming vehicles eligible for importation and this particular Moto Guzzi is on the list! Daytona RS 1996. So technically, this specific model can be imported and titled in the USA.

    Then the usual Texas Safety Inspection, which I don't see as a problem.

    Finally, you need to obtain a VIN inspection; this sounds a little bit more exotic. The inspector is an auto-theft specialist from the law enforcement. I suspect, this is to make sure the vehicle has not been stolen before its original credentials get laundered into a new US title.

    There rest of the procedure is the same for any other title transfer in Texas.

    You can of course choose an import agency to do the first part for you.

     

  13. You  guy's answers fit my belief. The so-called cooling jackets are supposed to work like an evaporator does. Since you need to wear it underneath a jacket, I am guessing the cooling effect gets lost.

    I don't think there is anything new in that department. They have so many solutions for winter, but so far, nobody really came up with working coolant system.

    It may change since we are heading more  towards extremes now.

  14. With the current temperatures felt, I found out that my multitasking jacket does not cut it. I purchased it earlier this year, but even with the liner removed, it gets uncomfortable. Not that I am not used to extreme temperatures, on both ends. Being an older guy, I would rather avoid a heat stroke if I can.

    Given that on a motorcycle, you need to remain focused on the road.

    I would like to purchase a jacket which is not a compromise summer/winter. I would like something which is exclusively conceived for hot weather, and still carries the usual protections.

    If anybody has any suggestion, I am listening. All the manufacturers have fancy names for Air flow, but I would rather follow advice from someone who wears one on a daily basis, not just a one time review.

    My second point is about those so-called "cooling jackets". You soak them in water, prior to your ride, and they are supposed to help for the next five to 10 hours. Anybody tried? are they effective?

  15. How cumbersome is it to get an imported bike registered in the US?

    Has anybody US based on this forum done it?

    Once I graduate from the V11 Le Mans, I would not mind finding a companion... and I just found this one....

    Look at this beauty! 1996, limited and numbered edition. But this one is in metric units. Where I am coming from, you would not be able to register a vehicle with different units, unless it is classified as historic or vintage.

    If I had the funds, I would have purchased this beauty already....
