  1. If'n I just had to do a complete motor for my Sport, I would try and recreate the build of the Telaio Rosso V7 Sport that were built in the race shop with the internals all polished and balanced, "blueprinted"even. I had thought that might be on my 100,000 mile to-do list, but looks like I'll just be changing some fluids, replacing a few seals, and thinking about SpeedHut.
  2. Hey, Orson, when is this? (Hoping it's not the weekend of Sept. 9-11 so you can get over the mountains from "Western North Carolina" to the Spine Raid!)
  3. That looks very nicely made. Is it steel of aluminum?
  4. As far as I know, all V11S are susceptible.. True that, although the 2002 seem over-represented. Maybe we need a poll?
  5. I recall there is a method to tighten the filter one and one eighth turns after the gasket touches. Works for me. We all put a layer of oil on the filter gasket first, yes?
  6. I would like to think *vapor lock* and *starter failure* rather than something like spun bearings . I wouldn't write the motor off just yet . . .
  7. I would put on a fresh one and check the pawl arm size for coil binding, but I'm no expert beyond having replaced a broken one once. I think LuckyPhil is our current world expert on the shift mechanism of the V11 series . . .

    RECTIFIER LOCATION

Having dropped my battery basket, I'm not sure there is enough clearance under there for the R/R without the shock spring pressing upon it in full compression. Seems to R/R is in a good place out front in the air, but there are other places for the fuel pump beside, or on top of, the spine frame.
  10. Might as well work the LuckyPhil magic on it while it's on the bench!
  11. That is trouble and should be checked at every filter change. Oil filters on these motors are a source of failure if they come loose, or if the gasket gets doubled. Hopefully, the motor has suffered no oil pressure losses . . .

  13. Those Champion (made in the UK) are identical to the resistor caps on the earlier, faster, better looking Sports of 1999-2001.
  14. Never have heard of that. "You put the lime in the coconut . . ."
  15. Does the right side exhaust header or exhaust canister have any signs of damage? Looks like she might have got pitched hard on her right side?
  16. Are the coil mounts the same as the ECU mounts? Those have all been known to fail . . .
  17. Don't those same pieces mount the coils and the ECU?
  18. Got nervous about the upward facing bolts and went to put LocTite on the nuts, but saw that the bolts thread up into the subframe and the flanged nuts do locking duty. They're not falling out. But I LocTited them anyway. Any luck with your seat latch, RHIP?

  20. With so many measurements to take on two separate bikes, while trying to keep them off their sides, we decided not to make any changes during this exercise. My rear Öhlins does have a remote adjuster cranked up about 3/4, but I am reluctant to move it. Twice I have found it backed off completely (the last time I pulled over to inspect because it felt like the rear tire had gone flat!). I painted a big, ugly white stripe down the side of the adjuster to alert me if it moves again. As GuzziMoto said, preload changes are not likely to materially change weight distribution. Even hanging twenty pounds behind the rear axle only changed the distribution 1%. And the rider only 2-3%. When we set up the test bed again, we will be making sag changes on the Sport1100 and can record the effect on weight distribution.
  21. That rates among the most ironic mixes of analog and digital ever.
  22. I used to put copper antiseize on my plugs until Andy York straightened me out on that. As L'Phil says, no paste required. I knew an Airframe and Powerplant Mechanic (airplane mechanic) that required me to torque my plugs for the correct heat transfer. How critical on an air cooled road bike? Well, I haven't done it that way in a long time . . .
  23. That's how the Sport1100 I recently looked at is set up (spacer on the left).
  24. Funny thing, when we weighed the two bikes without the rider, they, again, had identical distribution: 46/54 The Sport1100 with about a half tank of fuel weighed 483 lbs/219 kg and its rider 189 lbs/86 kg in a leather jacket and helmet. The V11 Sport with about 1.5 gallons of fuel weighed 524 lbs/238 kg and its rider 175 lbs/79 kg with helmet and Aerostich Roadcrafter 1 piece suit. (The Tekno panniers and their daily load-out added 18 lbs: 45/55 distribution) We did check the rake but one bike was free standing and the other with rider (more *poor science, Dr. Venkman* ) just to confirm that the earlier Sport has an extra degree of rake (V11 are 25º).
  25. Later tail sections were of different material and had a revised 'monkey-fist-hole.' Perhaps the later tail sections have an adjustable seat latch?
