After further review.. that's a candidate for a total restore..
-
I've seen them trade around 12 in pretty nice unrestored condition..

True. For instance, I had no idea that 50 people would want the Lucky Phil shifter extender.. Apparently, this is a project that *needs* to be done and fix that stupid pawl spring problem once and for all. Does anyone know where to find anything about it? I remember seeing it one time, and thought, "clever.." I'll never need it of course.. Then mine broke, too.

That coughing and sputtering is leanness. I certainly dealt with it on Brad and I's mini Carolina's spine raid. I'd tuned the Mighty Scura in 40 F temps with no alcohol fuel, and it was fine. Hadn't ridden it since. On the trip, the first time I put gasahol in it, it sneezed a couple of times going back out on the highway. It *never* does that. Farther into the trip as it got hotter, it showed a lot of just what you guys are talking about. Didn't like running at low speed at all. What was the difference? CO trim. I had dropped it 20 points when it was cold and straight gas, and it was fine. Once on the trip, and I was getting 50 mpg (!) I thought, "Uh oh. Sure hope it's not TOO lean." Nothing I could do about it without GuzziDiag. I lived with it for a week, and the first thing I did when I got home is bump the CO trip back up 20 points. Runs perfectly again.

^^^ Wat Scud sez. I basically did that with the Lario Rehab thread on WG. Tore it down once and replaced but mostly repaired (not restored) over a few months of Winter. There are many that know those bikes intimately.. you'll learn a lot about it, and end up with a completely reliable bike that you would ride anywhere. As I've mentioned more than once, "If you look for trouble on an old machine.. you *will* find it." Even as nice as it looks, I would expect to put a minimum of $2500 in it. If you pay someone to do the work?? You could buy a new bike instead.

Hmmm, the ad doesn't seem to be written by a Nigerian prince.. yes, entirely too cheap. Scud.. you could put it on a gurney in the aisle..
-
One of you guys needs to do this. Pictures would be good. That way, I won't have to do any thinking if mine breaks again.
-
Ah, well.. after all it's your bike. And.. it's a Guzzi. It'll never be an unmolested Crocker or something like that, value wise. If it were mine, rusty wouldn't get it, but powder coat is a little over the top. The stock ignition is as reliable as sun down. Greg Bender (thisoldtractor) makes new harness, and it will most likely need it. For some reason, you'll find more electrical bodges on old Guzzis than any other.. What I'd do if it looks as good as the pictures show, is repair as necessary to make it completely reliable, get rid of the rust.. i hate rust.. and ride it.

They're cheap. The usual suspects have em.. Buy two. If you have a spare, you'll never need it. That's been my method, and so far.. it's worked.

Well, that sucks, Scud. Since tuning up the Mighty Scura's transmission, new springs, Lucky Phil extender, surface grinding, etc. I'd forgotten about this. I haven't had the first issue.. no sticking when shifting down.. nothing. And now you're telling me I need to worry about it when I'm 1000 miles away from home? Grumble grumble..

Ride to Work Day in Phoenix
Chuck replied to bbolesaz's topic in Special place for banter and conversation
Gotta agree. I took my old SP out to California back in the day. There was a record heat wave, with temps into the 115F area by the time I got to Wyoming. I spent two days hunkered down behind that great SP fairing with a long sleeve t shirt under my riding jacket. I'd stop at every opportunity.. soak it, put it on, survive the shock put my jacket back on, and go until it dried out. It didn't take long. That was a *memorable* trip, one of survival rather than fun.. I was never so happy to see the smog over the cooler LA basin.. -
That'll get you a ticket for aggressive driving in Indiana..
-
I'd leave it alone except for new cylinders. Nice find of a "period" piece. That'll give you many happy hours of restoration/bonding..
-
- Replace (and properly gap) the sensor with a cold engine, and then warm her up and see if the issue returns.
-
The Mighty Scura's Staintunes has them built in..
-
Well, there went that theory.
-
Well, that should take care of the condensation in the morning at the Kentucky rally ..
-
Hmmm, normally that's water. You must have the rare water cooled 1000S. Or, maybe there is water collected in the muffler from sitting for years, and it's burning off? Been sitting on the sidestand?

True.. true..

I was coming back from a trip out east, stopped for gas, and an elegantly dressed (ahem) older lady looked the Norge over and said, "I can't drive one of those, but if I could, that would be the one I'd be driving."
-
That makes two Norges in Nova Scotia. A guy followed the Kid on his greenie and me on my Norge all the way through Halifax just to see them when we stopped. Said he'd never seen a Guzzi before. I was beginning to think he was stalking us..
-
Well, no. No smoke is normal. What color is it? Sure. Buy a new float. While you are at it, new needles and seats are called for. That's SOP on an old bike for me.
-
That's as about as nice work as I've seen an "amateur" machinist do..
-
To the best of my knowledge.. it's easier than you think. Unless they are different than the Rosso Corsa (I seriously doubt that, knowing Guzzi).. everything inside the tank is attached to the plate on the bottom of the tank. Of course, I'm willing to be proved to be a dumbass..
