Will California Special valve covers fit a V11 Cafe Sport?
Chuck replied to polebridge's topic in 24/7 V11
Ahhh. I haven't seen that one. There is a different part number for the valve cover gaskets, but they look similar in a picture. -
Oh, no.. I didn't do a plug chop. Just had a look at the plug hoping I didn't see any aluminum..

I fully realize I'm anal about this, but every year I give a bike an "annual inspection" just like an airplane. Every 2 or 3 years, I take *every* electrical connection apart, spray it with Caig DeOxit, put it back together and wiggle it around. Guzzis almost never fail mechanically, but the electrical systems need some help. When I was going through the Monza's electrical system last Winter, I found 3 connectors that were ready to fail from corrosion. Back in another lifetime when I was an engineering modelmaker, I worked with the reliability lab making test fixtures for the salt spray booth occasionally. That's 40 hours of salty water sprayed at a harness. I've never seen a Guzzi harness that would pass that one.

Where you want to look is toward the bottom of the insulator. Tan is good. White is lean. Black is oil and/or fuel fouled. Little balls of aluminum on it is Uh oh..

^^^^^ I've seen the tach act up with a bad battery, too. You can check the alternator output on the two yellow wires. It should be roughly 45-60 VAC. If so, and it isn't charging the battery, it'll most likely be the regulator. That is the most common failure.. caused by not adding a secondary ground from the regulator case to an engine case bolt.

I've read that you may or may not get the correct chip from Amazon.. the luck of the draw. It took about a week to get my cables from England, FWIW.
-
It reads 12.98 this morning. Blasting it with 10 amps for a couple of hours must have gotten it's attention..

^^^^^ Yeah. I've gone to to the Indy "Euro bike night" and have seen the Panigales with inch and a half chicken strips.. I had Rosie (Rosso Corsa) to one, and a guy that had a nice newer MV looked at me and said.. "There's the class of the whole bunch." He didn't realize I was Rosie's keeper at the time. You either get it or you don't..

I think what you are saying is you've seen round head valve covers on square fin motors. It takes an adapter plate.. but that can be done. -
Probably.

Good plan..

Gotcha, I read the thread.. it's sitting at 14.85 as we speak after I pulled the charger.
-
Oh, I was just talking about tuning, John.. you can probably get Honda prophylactics.. Guzzi stuff not so much.

Mine was at +20 when it was running lean. I put it back to +40, and it's fine again. It certainly sounds like the same issues I was having on this trip, but my engine/PC map may not equal your situation. At any rate, I'd look at reasons it could be lean. Air leak, etc.

Interesting. I went out to ride the AeroLario, and click, click from the Odyssey. Hmmmm. Read this thread instead of glossing over it. Ok, I'll try running the lights for 3 minutes. Click click. Checked voltage 12.34. Punched the starter button to see what it read, and it cranked fine, voltage was 11.88. I'll file this in the "some things aren't meant to be understood" file. I may have 2 things going on.. I have Harley Bob's battery charger hooked up as we speak on manual, 10 amps. I'll go out and cane the tits off the Monza for an hour, come back and see what the Lario battery reads. If it's not 13.4, I'll repeat until it is, then put it on the tender overnight.

Seriously, I'm convinced UFI had a gasket manufacturing issue for a long time. I'm pretty sure that is what brought on the entire "hose clamp" issue. I quit using them and hose clamps in 07. Recently someone posted a UFI picture with much of the paint gone, so you can add paint prep issues, too. Over the years, I've seen guys with outsiders mention UFIs leaking around the crimp. My Norge did that.. and I haven't used one since.

If you read through the spine raid report I posted yesterday, I dealt with that the whole trip. The issue was the CO trim set too lean. What is your's set at?

Funny. Brad and I were in the elevator of a fancy hotel and I had my Kentucky rally shirt on. A guy entered, and said, "Do you ride a Guzzi?" When I said sure, he said.. "*Seriously??" I thought maybe you just had a t shirt..

When the Kid first got a Guzzi (lowryter's greenie) he said, "This is fun. I can make it better." Never could do that with Japanese bikes.."
-
Thanks. It *was* a great trip even though the Mighty Scura grumbled about it the whole time. Being so lean, it spit and coughed all the time at small throttle openings and the transitions from light to heavy throttle. Wouldn't run at all at 3000 rpm. I didn't look at the plugs because I knew there was nothing I could do about it without GuzziDiag. As soon as we came home, I pulled a plug, and it was lean, but ok. Whew! 2017-06-04_01-30-49 by Charles Stottlemyer, on Flickr Hooked up GD and set the CO back to +40. I don't get to see the Kid very often.. it was a reeeely good time.
