  3. I'd have the SAAB. Back in the day, the Volvo bricks had a reputation in Melbourne. It lasted, more or less, until the 850 came out. Up until then, the Volvo marketing emphasised how safe the cars were. Justifiably, if I remember correctly. That led to them being bought by people who relied on the car to keep them safe instead of learning how to drive safely. The motorcycling community was of the firm opinion that if you see a Volvo, you should give it a lot of space. Relevant to the following anecdote, drivers wearing hats were also considerd dangerous. In the late '80s, a man in a car with a hat on was likely to be getting on in years. I was riding through the suburb of Ivanhoe in Melbourne and came up behind a Volvo brick. I think it was a 244 Station Wagon. Squeaky clean, driver wearing a hat, custom number plates that read "Grandad". Maybe I misjudged the man, but I pulled over and waited for him to disappear.

  5. oooh. my. I see I wrote about he Duc here too. It needed a new ABS pump as well as the radiator. The pump is $3k new, found take off for $60. So for the radiator, a new shiny aluminum Chinese radiator for $185. The bike was within a few hundred miles of the 36k service so the labor costs were only marginally more. Less than buying a pair of tires. I will say it was disappointing but it could've been worse. I've put a little more that 1,000 miles since the repair. EBay and internet can be your friends. As well as a local tech shop that'll work on Guzzis and Ducs.

  7. This brought back a memory... I once flew from Paris to Rome seated next to a man wearing a cap with "Captain" on the front. Like on a ship. He had a dictaphone in his hand (yes, back then), and he went on reporting absolutely all the trivial matters for the duration of the flight; such as: -They have closed the doors -They are demonstrating the safety procedure; -They started the engines. -we are taxiing. -We are taking off; time is:..... -We took off. And so on. I remember thinking: what does he do with the recordings? today, I know. This is actually the audio version of all those "influencers" that document absolutely everything of what they do in life.

  8. We had on in recently that had done the same thing with the retainer nuts on the intermediate shafts. The nuts and lock washers are standard SKF items. SKF can supply a socket for tightening/removing them as well but I have a complete set for all the Tonti/V11/CARC nuts made for me by Rolf Halverson twenty or more years ago. They’ve been a godsend. Michael has inherited them now.

  10. OK, finally got the gearbox out and apart. As I reported elsewhere here, they've ordered new Temken cage bearings. The crux of the problems was one of the retainers came loose from one of the gears on the secondary shaft. The gear was grinding into the side cover and etched a nice ring. They said a lot crap was in the bottom of the case. We assume that all those shavings took out the bearings. They haven't disassembled the gear set yet because they had to order a tool to remove one of the retainers. So far it looks good, but we won't know it's taken apart and inspected. The special hair spring that I purchased here will be installed when the transmission goes back together. Another thing I might try are some new clutch springs. Someone, locally I believe, has come with better clampin but smoother and light action springs. I was told that it would make the clutch lever, although I don't how that's possible. Hopefully that bike will be on the road in the next couple of weeks. There's a silver Sport in the shop too. It belongs to one of younger techs. The gearbox is removed on that one too. Mine will be a teaching example for him.

  12. Already, it's year since I posted about the Ulster Rally 3, on May Spring Bank Holiday 2024. Yes, there was a rather unseemly gap between the first two in 2009 and 2010 and the third, fourteen years later. Well, last year's event in the Sperrins 'area of outstanding natural beauty was excellent' and I'm having another this year, same location, same long-weekend. Andy Bogwopit has just messaged me here, so I hope he'll make it. A couple of others from England have booked, and there was a good contingent of Scottishers last year.   14. p6x = the charging system is off or out of circuit until the headlight relay is energized (turned on). Nothing is taking place until the key is turned on. Remember that if you connecting jumper cables or a jump box. Moral of the story ; you will not do any damage as long as the key switch is off. AFA the diodes in the alternator or regulator . These are probably rated to handle 2Xs the normal voltage and or current they will be exposed to . They are probably not going to fail. AFA the warnings. The manufacturer does not like returns so they want to safeguard against them . Disconnect before charging is how you cut this off. also , you stay away from liability. You have no idea who is fooling w/this stuff. The best advice I ever heard was , a buddy was trailering his bikes to Sturgis and the alt. failed on his truck . By the time he got stopped at a hotel the battery was dead. He went to a franchise parts store , they bench tested the alt. and it was bad . The salesman told Phil to charge the battery completely before installing the new alt. because this alt. would "burn up" trying to charge the dead battery. He bought a cheap charger and charged the battery overnight before leaving out the next morning. An alternator is designed (kinda wimpy) to maintain battery voltage . So , if you are jumping allow it to charge a while before cranking . Anyone that has jumped off a dead vehicle you know how loud an alternator gets recharging !

  15. Thanks Docc, back in ye olden days there were a few Welsh riders, round and about at V11 UK events ok. Baldini was Cymru Comrade in Chief and he might still be around the forum. He's been more active here than I have, from what I saw previously. Having the Ulster Rally event just made me think about it again. There are active connections between NI and Scotland, England to a slightly lesser degree, but not so much Wales, though a few folk here go to the annual MG Red Kite Rally in Wales. On a different though possibly related note, the Moto Guzzi dealership situation in UK is ever more dire, with more dealers jumping ship, or effectively being pushed over the brink by Piaggio Guzzi. Once again we have no dealership here in NI and I don't see it ever coming back. Of course that means the vital portal connection is unplugged and no PADS, service, service record etc etc. Nevertheless, we do receive the intensely annoying glossy Guzzi adverts for buying into super-shiny Modern Guzzi Life (without a dealer and without any super-shiny aftercare). Is the NA dealer network still in decline, I wonder, these C21 days? 1930 Sport 14 at last year's Ulster

  16. I bought it back in the 80s, when it was only "expensive." I chose it as it was very flexible, able to be curled up for underseat storage. Made in USA, so you know it's vintage.

  18. I don't mind taking the seat off, it is easy enough. However the wires are really difficult to be held together to pass the screw in and then in the battery termina. Then you need to screw the nut. But the solution you are proposing seems easy enough.

  19. I'm heading way off topic hear, but would like to make a point: Stuff sold as "speaker wire" is one of the ways the hi-fi branch makes a heap of profit. Yes, those speaker wires will pass a lot of current, but that has mostly to do with them being 6 gauge wire, i.e. really, really fat. The more copper in the wire, the more current it can pass without getting hot.

  20. This makes zero sense at all as probably over 2 billion vehicles worldwide are at some point on battery tenders/chargers with the batteries still connected. When you come across stuff like this you look at the overwhelming evidence in front of you and see if it aligns with the "advice" you've been given. Phil

  21. There has been some extensive discussion of this matter here. At one time, there was an opinion from one of the regulator/rectifier suppliers to disconnect the battery when charging from an external source. Subsequent discussion from some knowledgeable members refuted this based upon the presence of diodes in the regulator/rectifier stating that it is fine to charge the battery without disconnecting. Since I have a "service switch" as part of the 30 amp circuit breaker set-up, I always disconnect when charging because 1) it's easy for me, and 2) isn't it the diodes that are at risk of damage in the R/R to begin with?
