Fourteenth South'n Spine Raid 2018
docc replied to Blueboarhound's topic in Meetings, Clubs & Events
So, you know you're "loaded for bear" when you need one parking place for your bike, and another for all your kit . . . Somewhere in all of that kit is danl's new Chook-designed / Scud-made Super-Shift-Spring. The Jakester also went home from the SSR with one. All of the other V11ers assured me they already had them. I'm holding out one for Andy York and one more for . . . Thanks, again, to Scud for the springs to share, and to Chuck for the engineering! -
Which would you prefer?

eh . . . that's a hundred pounds. My V11 would have to ride itself. -

I feel so, so lucky for that time together; that place to wait out the storm . . . And be with people I trust. -

Meeting up for such great food at The Tapoco (TAllahassee POwer COmpany) Lodge was so fabulous and unexpected. Turns out that rolling mountain stream is the Cheoah River: -

Totally LMAO when I read the replies to that last image! I looked back at my notes at the six weeks of prep before this ride involving three V11 and about 700 miles riding (more than the ride itself) . . . parts exchanges, international shipping, hit-and-run wrench sessions in the corners of remote garages. What a blast! Probably the most difficult SpineRaid I've ever prepped for and attended, if not just for the dental abscess I let get away. The ingenuity, capability, and preparedness of this community continues to impress! As well as the generosity and genuine care and sharing. To paraphrase Chuck's paraphrase: "It takes a village to ride a Guzzi" -

Those are kind words. I am humbled. Seriously, though, the TechSessions simply flourished without much of my influence. After all, this is what SpineRaid is all about. You guys are amazing! There were even TechSessions in the background . . . -

Pretty awesome to share in European travel experiences. I do dream of sitting by the shore of Lago de Como. Amazing to intercept Pressureangle on his extraordinary tour of the USA.

Pretty sure Moto Guzzi might have also been "only guessing about what they might have been doing or why . . ." Holding over (or "using up") the 1100 Sport clamps with the new, short RedFrame certainly may have affected trail enough to contribute to early reports of "instability", especially compared to the "typical" running-on-rails Guzzis. Moto Guzzi looks to have acted early to change the perceived handling characteristics on the early RedFrame. Moving, in 2002, to introduce the longer frame, different forks/ clip-ons, wider rear wheel/tire, and extensively braced subframes along with less race oriented tires.

Saturday night and Sunday morning, there were four different Italian marques in the garage. Josh's Katzenjammer is an understated amazement! -
I can't count the number of stumbly V11 that straightened out with Best Relays and a Decent Tune-up.

I have seen my first "early" 2000 V11 Sport triple clamp at the Fourteenth South'n Spine Raid; build date: 1-2000 (footgoose's sweet, black V11 Sport). . Upper triple clamp part number 01 49 3100. [ My Sport's build date is 3-2000 and has the "relaxed" triples (upper clamp part # 501 452). ] Quite serendipitous to have a 1997 1100Sport-i, courtesy of Pressureangle, at the South'nSpineRiad. Same upper triple part number as footgoose's early (1-2000) V11 Sport! My take at this juncture from all we have been able to discern: >The earliest 1999-2000 "short" spine frame (RedFrame) *may have* a 1/2º steepened head tube angle. Mounted with the earlier triple clamps of the previous generation 1100Sport, the rake *may be* 24.5 degrees and a bit dramatic for a big, tipsy girl on high heels. >The triple tree change (501 452 upper) brought the geometry back to the published 25º rake. >While Guzzi has never been known for a specific date for parts changeover, footgoose's 1-2000 Sport has the earlier parts and my 3-2000 has the later parts [edit: as does LuckyPhil's 2-2000 Sport.] Thanks to these gentlemen for their contributions:

In solidarity with Blueboarhound, and his buddies, who tried so hard to get there, we toasted their efforts. And toasted to their better fortunes. We toasted the Daytona. We toasted the Daytona's toasted oil pump. We toasted to the number of times Blueboarhound must have inserted "F#*&ing" into every sentence that day. After that last toast, we had to send the Bier Scow out for another load . . . -
Over the years, this community has developed some very solid and reliable approaches to common issues of the V11 Moto Guzzi. While there are several excellent threads to be found in Frequently Asked Questions, those topics are closed to replies. All of the pinned technical threads that were in this Technical Topics subforum are now pinned in "How to . . ." While looking into common V11 issues, and their solutions, be certain to spend some time looking through those pinned threads. They are open for ongoing discussion and contain invaluable insight and solutions. As always, Technical Topics is the best place to reply to and post technical discussion.

And just in case anyone thinks the TechSession thing is exaggerated, danl brought a dial indicator and recorded radial play in reardrive input shafts (pinion bearings) on six Spine guzzis (five V11), and even took interview notes on mileage and lubrication history. And that was today (early Sunday morning) !! -

Don't tell me you guys haven't been using the proper incantations during your valve adjustments? . . .or is that decantations? -
John is a solid guy. Posting here as Ryland3210 , his contributions to solving V11 relay issues and oil filter back-off cannot be overstated. :luigi:

There is some matter of how a particular engine "makes power." Much like the tone of a musical instrument. I have a fiddle that "Sounds better than it deserves to." After all, can quality be quantified? "And what is good, Phædrus? And what is not good--- Need we ask anyone to tell us these things?" -Pirsig
