  1. I have oft likened balancing the throttle bodies to tuning a musical instrument. There is a great, settling joy when the harmony is found.

  2. Just for the sake of showing off, I've got a set of these: https://www.boehm-synchrontester.de/ I don't expect that they are available in the USA, but who knows. They're fiddly, because one has to adjust the damping on them for the best compromise between "open enough to measure realistically" and "closed enough to stop them oscillating madly". Despite that, I really like using them. Probably because it's fiddly, and you feel like you're being really professional. And they're just pretty.

  3. Agreed….I used the scotchbrite for most of the cleanup originally, but had the 600 out at the end to quickly address a bit of orange-peel in one area. I got a little carried away with it, assuming the 600 wouldn’t actually have much “cut”, but misjudged a bit. Also took the opportunity to pull flyscreen off and hit the un-finished backside with some satin black. I’ll sleep better at night now…

  4. Green Scotchbrite gives the best satin finish to aluminium.

  5. You can make your own balance tube tool to synchronize the throttle bodies if Scud doesn't have one. It is simple on a V11 because there are only two cylinders and two throttle bodies. I found out about this from an old post from 2003. 6. Decided for now to strip it then clear coat the aluminum (cast) piece, as I wasn’t loving the idea of layers of primer and paint, and all the exposed transition edges. So far it’s looking ok, way better than the damaged aluminum-colored paint that I got it with, but will be easy to pull and do again if I don’t like how it looks on the bike. Got a little carried away with the 600 grit in a couple spots, and didn’t want to buff it any more and get it any shinier, as too much shine is what will make it not look right on the bike. We’ll see. And Stein Dinse delivered the new stainless nut today. So re-assembly can commence this weekend, and maybe get ‘er runnin finally, soon.

  7. @80CX100 Thank you for the kind words! If that Quota had not been the one, I would have most likely purchased one of the two California listed on eBay... I completely concur with the line's altering after market accessories. I would never put side cases on it, but that camel hump in the back is going to be handy. You see, since I have the Le Mans, I only had a small tail bag which could only cater for the bare necessities. I have suffered to not be able to carry my photographic equipment, a special interest of mine. I actually do a lot of food photography, and use Tilt and Shift lenses; those require a tripod. I purchased the smallest tripod that I could find, but unfortunately, even if it fits in the bag, I do not have enough space left to carry more equipment. That top case on the Quota is going to change that. It would be tempting to install a better windscreen that the ersatz one that comes with the Quota. I will just roll with the too small one. At present, my biggest issue is the Tachometer that refuses to tell me the truth. Obviously, I don't want anything else but what came stock with the bike. In the same way, I love that exhaust, and I am not going to replace it with a Mistral or else. I need to get that Tach. to work. I will first try the relay swap, and if that does not work, I will continue my quest for a fix. The Tachometer seems to be accurate at low revs, even if not completely steady. However, I soon as I rev it up, it becomes unreliable and erratic. Of course, before I use the Quota seriously, I am going to do a complete overhaul. Tune-up, brakes, suspension, everything.

  8. I can't believe I'm actually reading this thread, reliving my past nightmare with my speedo. It still surprises me there is no mechanical replacement, cheap and easy. The internet is full of cheap and easy mechanical cable-driven speedos/tach. I ended up replacing both angle gears and cable, spending far too much and all seems well now. However, I spent even more money when I found an NOS white face speedo (It may be a unicorn). It now lives on a shelf, waiting for it's turn. Hope you get this sorted.

  9. Serendipity has recently become one of my favorite words;it may become one of yours. The valve core failed at the right time,,you were treated like royalty & given the kid glove treatment to the dealer. The dealer stepped up & obviously did an A1 job on the tube/tire change; Heck! I bought a Nomar because I had trouble getting that simple job done locally. Managed to keep the pride & ego at bay; & when you were cold, stopped short, but at the right time. You've learned quickly what took me years to finally adopt, even though I'd read the advice by many guzzisti . The Tonti 5 speed tranny should be treated like a 4 speed with a 5 gear OD; the engine, drivetrain & riding experience, are all in a happier place, much nicer riding groove to get into. I think after doing the valves & a decent tune up your mileage should improve; as you work your way through the bike & wiring harness.connections the tach may solve itself. I have a beautiful OEM MG center top luggage bag that came with my CalVin;I feel stupid sometimes because I leave it on the shelf, but I'll explain why I do. It's extremely handy, but the weight & the wind it catches;is in the worst spot to negatively affect the handling (& mileage btw) but also ruins the beautiful lines of my bike, jmho. I've never wrenched my back or fallen badly;but I have caught my leg swinging it over top cases,,ouch! Unless it's a low profile top case,,,I usually leave them on the shelf. fwiw ymmv What a beautiful bike & a great outcome. tks for taking the time to document & share your adventure with us. Wishing you both, many miles & smiles

  10. I have seen many V11 tachometers adversely affected by a marginal Relay (especially #2 on the V11Sport/LM). That function is far more sensitive than the headlight. One can hope (while being deliberate and knowledgeable) . . .

  11. Noted! If I go, I will be on four wheels and not on two. I am still sans motorcycle. The Quota is available, however I want to do a full inspection before I do anything more with it. My V11 is still at MPH. I am going to check if that Road 6 tire finally materialized. There really seem to be an issue with supply chain and tires lately. Go Az also told me they could not get the 10/90 tires I wanted, for lack of availability from their supplier. I checked some of the usual sites, and found out a lot of those tires are sold out, too. The Dunlop Trailmax Mission were the only one available in the sizes I needed; Continental, Metzeler, Pirelli, Bridgestones, Michelin... nada!

  12. The drawings I looked at do not match what I am looking at on my Quota; The number of relays is the same as that of the V11: 5. I have replaced the four ones situated on the right from the flasher. I did a static check, and yes, it seems the tachometer is less shaky and indicates what I think should be the correct rpm. I now need to run a dynamic test to confirm. This is going to come in a few moments. This Quota does not have a dual lights front beam. It looks more like the smaller single lens front of the European sold Daytona.

  14. I'm ashamed, I have yet to have ever balanced mine. Or on my V7 either. @Scud is local to me and I believe he has the knowledge and tool to do this. One of these days, I hope to meet up with him, if not for a ride, than a beer in the garage.

  16. Sounds like it is in common with the early (1999-2001) Sport, then. The group of two are the last two in our V11 Sport/LM: Fuel/Ignition and ECU. The group of three will be Start (with the weak NC contact), the "Headlight" relay that includes the tachometer feed, and the "Sidestand"/Neutral switch relay. If they are all the same size (micro-ISO) as our V11, then the OMRON are well indicated. It would be quite a victory if the tachometer normalizes!

  17. There seem to be 5, however, distributed in two groups; there is one group of 2, and another group with three + the turn indicators flasher close to the fuses box on the left hand side of the Quota. I have not yet been inside there. I am just looking at the manuals from "thisoldtractor". Are those relay the same as the V11 ones, which I have 5 OMRON spares?

  18. The V11 sport/LeMans wiring suffers from tachometer issues because of Relay#2 (NO contact) and, on the early V11 (1999-2001) failure of the weak Relay#1 NC contact. Are there three relays on the Quota, or five like the V11 Sport/LM?

  19. It is Katarzyna Jaskulska, that was a false rumor..She was in a bad accident not long after this shot.., a car went through a stop light and hit her ..but she was not terribly hurt . Professional Stunt rider..She did not die..she is still with us.

  21. Till the rubber cracks. No, seriously, assuming they are in good nick and not old and hard, just until the rubber starts to show the very first signs of bulging out from under the clamp. If they are old and hard, they need to be replaced.

  25. Just makes it easier. You can stick a couple of straight pins into the harness connector, but that's so gauche.

  26. Yes, they can be overtightened to the point the rubber is pinched and curls. Tight enough that they will not turn by hand. Shin-Etsu Grease is our friend! Any changes to the intake tract (intake rubbers, throttle bodies, valve adjustment) and the throttle body balance (complete Decent Tune-up, even?) should be performed . . .
