  1. My Quota now shows her birth certificate. I purchased a correct year 2000 millesime license plate, and I registered it yesterday. I like that you can do that in Texas. Once any of your vehicle has reached 25 years of age, you can install a vintage tag on it. On top of it, 2000 was the beginning of the new millenium. I think it is a good thing. I am planning to do the same with my 911 when my registration runs out later this year. I found the perfect plate. This one is a reflection of my birth date and lucky number, the way I carried it P6....

  2. No idea; inside the case, there were a bunch of old invoices, and on one of them, there were two replacement rims.

  8. Updated on December 23rd, 2024; Here's the map with the 2025 edition 50 stops, 5 alternative stops, and the B option, named Republic of Texas "ROT" which seems like an unfortunate name.

  9. I bought this silver front fender with the intention of having it painted green for my 2001 V11-Sport. I never got around to it and now it's just collecting dust. It's free if you pay the shipping

  11. Congrats! I have sold cars and motorcycles, but (almost) always with a pang of regret. We keep most of ours for years and hundreds of thousands of miles. My '98 EV, bought as a new leftover in 2000, has 108K miles, and would have many more if I had not had dalliances and affairs with others along the way ... although several of those are still in my moto-harem down in the snowed-in Moto Grappa. At risk of offering even more evidence of my pedantry, was not the year 2000 the last year of the second millennium, and thus not the first year of the third? Best wishes from the frozen top of Virginia, Bill P.S. I like the way you don't mask your tags. It always interests me when folks do that.

  12. Some thieves are now targeting people that have moved to hotels, as many have taken with them some valuable items. Maybe with some inside complicity, as to who recently moved. When you thought it could not get worse, then you get reminded that you can expect nothing good from anybody.

  13. He also replaced the electric petcocks which were known to fail, and the oil pressure sensor. Its actually quite touching because you find the owner's handwriting on documentation and the owner's manual. He was treating his motorcycle with loving care. He wrote down all the flaws that he learned along the way. Hopefully, he watches me from above, and appreciate that I am also doing all I can to make that Quota last. I wish I could ask him what were the purpose of the holes that were drilled in the fairing.

  16. The governing factor in the case of a 90 degree V twin with regards to the exhaust scavenging is the point of cross section dia of the secondary pipe. So the first major cross sectional change is what generates the negative pressure pulse. In multi cylinder engines they combine this with the collector shape so the designated cylinders "talk to each other" as well. This is a Ducati Corse 888 "spaghetti" exhaust. The small short link pipes between the front and rear cylinders primary role is to create the large cross sectional change in pipe dia to generate the negative pressure wave to help with cylinder evacuation and subsequent filling. It's not there specifically for splitting the exhaust flow to both mufflers. Thats a secondary benefit. There are two link pipes and the second one is obscured but you can see it's retaining spring underneath. Phil

  17. Congrats! During the two first tour I did, I kept sending suggestions. None of them made the roster. I also found a dealership in Houston, willing to sponsor the tour. The owner fit the criterion of running a family operation. He never was contacted. When I asked the tour director about it, he said they had no room for new sponsors; yet each year, some old sponsors are dropped and so new ones come.

  18. Just signed up. I'd suggest that next year they add at least as an alternative something farther West. Rosa's Cantina in El Paso, perhaps. I would love to do the ROT tour but probably wouldn't have the time, as it is I'm going to bang out the stops on the way from Michigan to El Paso in one go.

  19. HeLL no. Mine on the black frame and red frame were all I needed . I had to use a heat gun and the best SnapOn Allen socket known to man to get them apart . I got some spare screws from Fastenal for the next time. I had to remove the assemblies to get the job done. The fact is , the more you do it , the easier it gets !

  23. Ah, good. Let's be clear, he didn't call Dave a thief. It was said that the transmission went to Dave at Barber, and it wasn't seen again, and 'follow up calls' didn't (get resolution) He did *not* say 'Dave stole my transmission', and I was not interested in hearing the sad tale, as I knew what I was buying. That said, I would very much like to have the original box back in the bike. There is one box of parts I missed loading that I'll collect this weekend, I have no idea if any trans parts are there. If Dave has money in to the trans, (assuming he still has it) I have no problem covering that bill; also, I have no interest in involving the original owner as that ship apparently sailed years ago. I'll speak directly to Dave about it, if that works PM me and I'll give my contact information. If Dave wants the original owner's contact information to affix the headstone to their conversations, I'll ask him this weekend if that's ok with him.

  24. Dave Blue is by no means a thief! My name is Brian McCall. I have known the original owner of this bike since he bought the bike from GT Motors in Lansing, MI where I was working at the time. I uncrated the bike and set it up for owner. I have a personal stake in this as I am the person who transported the transmission to Dave. I was given the transmission in a box which I then transported to Dave. I never inspected the contents of the box. Dave called sometime later and asked where the back cover was. I referred him to the owner who claimed it was all in the box he gave to me at Barber Motorsports. I have no idea where the back cover is or has been. I do not believe either Dave or I ever saw or had possession of the back cover. My belief is that the original owner misplaced the cover and did not include it with the partially disassembled transmission I was given. I spoke with Dave this morning and I am willing to put the current owner in touch with Dave and have Dave's permission to do so. I think the original transmission should go back into this bike. I get the feeling that Dave does too. Brian

  25. Funny related bit of info. I have a Jeep Wrangler. It has a V6 engine with two sets of exhaust pipes, one per bank. They merge together back behind the engine and trans on the left side of the vehicle. Unless you did something to account for length, the length of the exhaust before where they merge would be shorter on the left side since the right side exhaust pipe has to go further to cross over to the left side of the vehicle. What the factory did to account for the difference in length was to bend the left side pipe into a loop. That loop makes the two pipes the same length from the head to the merge point. But that loop is prone to hitting rocks if you offroad. We in fact did that, putting a dent in the looped part of the pipe. The solution is to replace the loop with a fairly straight length of pipe that does away with the loop. But if the straight pipe was the same diameter you would be introducing an uneven-ness to the exhaust system, with the left side exhaust pipe being shorter then the right side exhaust before they merge. To overcome that the people who make the replacement pipe make the straight non-looped pipe using larger diameter pipe. Because the shorter section of pipe is larger in diameter the exhaust in it slows down so that it takes a similar length of time for the exhaust to travel through that section of pipe as it would have if the exhaust was going through the longer looped section of pipe it replaces. Thus, the two sides still reach the merge when they are supposed to and the two sides still have what acts like the same length exhaust system. Even though one side is actually shorter in length. You never know but given the distance this change in diameter is from the exhaust valve I doubt it really makes a difference in power. But it may make a difference in sound.

  26. all good. I don’t think dave is on this forum, but he’ll get back to me at some point and i’ll let you know. he’s a really good guy, with a very long resume of working directly for moto guzzi and various moto guzzi tech and race teams back when they did that going on, but dont think he does a lot of forums or email. i’ll get back to you soon once i have info. might prove helpful one way or another.

  27. agreed, and thats the main reason i let this very minor “unsolved mystery” fester in my mind. exhaust flow dynamics can yield all kinds of results, but it does seem very unusual to have a non-2-stroke motor with an expanding outlet/exhaust, except in oddball cases, like the “power bomb” chambers on some dirt bikes, etc. The double wall thing certainly would explain things, though i’m guessing that mid pipe isn’t double wall. it is worth noting that while the V85 mid pipe pictured above is illustrative of my V11, it isn’t quite the same and is definitely more extreme. the V11 mid has a much milder expansion where the header and mid join. i’m sure its all fine, though it’s still mildly of interest as to why that mid pipe slightly flairs to a larger diameter (on top of the fact that the header slides into and not over the mid pipe, making it a double step change in diameter as it flows downstream)

  28. I'd like to think there's some simple explanation or rebuttal, there was of course a bit more to the story but I'm not one to air dirty laundry in a public forum- I had no idea Dave was a well-known and apparently respected expert. I don't know this seller personally either, so there's that.

  33. Mine had marginal voltage from the time I bought it, and continually gradually worstened until it became problematic. Short story is the wires from the generator to the regulator had a connection under the tank that had gone sour. Removed the connection (rather than replace the connectors) and voltage went from 13.3-ish to 14.2. Idle charge went from 12.3-ish to 12.8-ish. My idle is probably 100-200rpm lower than recommended, I'm idling 1100 + or - 100.

  34. The R/R is, indeed Ducati Energia. This light/ voltage behavior is very similar to the last time mine needed replacing.

  35. I reckon I read a couple of times about potential cracking in the frame, maybe around the swing-arm mount, on the early model(s). Don't remember the details, I'm afraid, as the Quota doesn't interest me at all (chook-chaser...)

  36. 99% of Guzzi happens at the wrong time . I was reading a test report of the Quota when it was a new bike . the writer was telling about all the -s about the bike and ended up telling about a 60mph get-off on a dirt road . his crash bent a lever and a few scratches. I will paraphrase what he said " I am convinced the only thing that will harm this bike is a depleted uranium bullet" . The first bike had some rims splitting and something else , I can't remember.

  37. Not good if you want your crop in. When wheat harvest comes around it used to be an 18 hr day. Anymore, the folks I know with land, contract the farming out. No point owning all the equipment and using it a week a year, unless you want to be a contractor.

  38. AFA farm equipment , Deere & Co. lets you know , you might own the tractor , combine or other self propelled equipment BUT they own the technology . Hmmm. FWIW , when the Russians (or whatever they now go by) liberated all the green equipment a neighboring Country and took it somewhere else , after a week or so ALL their self propelled green stuff shut down and would no longer run
