From Mark. It was low on gear lube. If you use the side drain hole to find the level and if you use a funnel to fill which drains toward that side of the rear drive it can flow down the threads and pour out the side hole before it's really up to that level. always fill with measured amount and don't even take the side plug out.

Thankyou Roy for confirming my belief in Vaseline! And for explaining how once I had battery terminal that "looked" perfectly fine but didn't conduct, probably was that nasty oxide.

I'd still clean the grounds first. And the battery terminals, once I swore they looked perfectly clean but after scuffing up the contact points all was good again.

Pass on the dialectic, you already know why. Dielectric grease, or tune-up grease, is a silicone-based grease that repels moisture and protects electrical connections against corrosion. ... The grease does not conduct electricity, so it shouldn't be applied directly to the mating surfaces (pins and sockets) of an electrical connection

I would start with a little sand paper on all the ground connections. Especially the battery to frame ground mentioned above. And I'd clean and sand paper the battery terminals too then coat with Vaseline.
