  1. You can remove the switch and stick something (be creative) into the hole to prevent fluid from leaking out. Then use a electrical contact cleaner to (obviously) clean the contacts in the switch. It might take a few minutes to do this so don't expect a sudden miracle. Use an ohm-meter to test the switch verifying that it now works and reinstall it. Check the gear oil level then you're done....
  2. When you reassemble anything using needle rollers, use a liberal amount of petroleum (Vaseline) jelly. This will hold everything in place til start-up. The Vaseline will melt upon warm-up and allow the gear oil to do it's job. Using any other type of grease MIGHT have a higher melting temp. This will give you trouble if a passage stops up and stops the flow of lubrication.
  3. Don't worry. they will break! I saw a man at the BMW Pickwick Dam Rallye who owns a Ducati. He told me his Duke let go of a timing belt.. $$$$$. He took it part himself and the head work was still expensive.
  4. I am sorry for the circumstances causing the sale. You know you will not be forgotten just because you no longer are sitting on one of the hardest seats in cycling. Please stay on the site and get another bike when things "pick up". Please (as with all members) keep us posted if you need any a$$i$tance. I have hit bottom before. After going through a divorce I lived in a friends house and then a church parsonage (free)because I was flat broke. Don't be afraid to ask, because I'm not afraid to give...........

  6. This stuff reminds me of my AJS 250 Stormer I owned in the 70s. I found out that Lucifer and the British bike industry had an exclusive agreement on instruments of torture. I think British bikes should have a warning label "Don't ride me any farther than you can push me back" permanently attached to the top of the fuel tank. I was more than glad to give that #!!$%&^&(((*** $%%^&**&^%$$%$%$%%^^^ away.

  8. Is that a factory wheel? I thought they were ony available with 16'' wheel or an optional 18" wheel.
  9. John, I don't think I posted anything disagreeable? Do you remember the brand and part # of the Mitsubishi starter. The relay is the only way to go to cure a lot of current (not voltage) problems. You will make sure you get a good flow of I and E to the starter solenoid. You will save the switch (from burning up) also. I nstalled a headlamp (headlight switch) relay kit on my 87 SE. This kept me from burning up a $175.00 switch.
  10. The most inexpensive tool you can own is a test light. When you have a "no start" condiriion touch the properly grounded test ligh to the start terminal of the starter to see if it lights when you press the starter button. If it lights the problem is the starter or improperly grounded starter. I install shakeproof washers on all ground connections. If there is no light,start going backwards on the circuit until you get a "light on" condition with the test light. I assume you have a wiring diagram and are competent enough to use it? If so,you will find your problem. If you need more help me pm me for my cell and shop #s.

  12. It looks like a roll pin. 1/8" diameter? You can purchase a double roll pin that is probably better.
  13. At least you filled it with something. You should hear about these Quick-lube places that would drain the gear oil on Saab 900s w/manual trans.,add 5 qts of oil and send them down the road!
  14. You're o.k. For safety's sake , change the gearbox oil again in 100 mi.

  17. Disconnect the shift linkage from the shift lever. Move the lever up and down.If it will not fall after raising the lever by hand. If it is not free, remove the pivot bolt and lubricate the bushin the bolt goes through. If it( shift lever) moves freely, suspect something inside the shifter housing. p.s. the shift lever bolt nut is a jam nut. The frame is threaded where the shift lever bolt goes through. My bike sat for 4 weeks waiting on a shift spring to find the shift lever pivot was sticking.

  20. The "Donner Party". Probably the worst documented event in U.S. history. I watched a documentary about this 20 yrs. ago on PBS. Every 5 min. I thought it couldn't get any worse but it did! Everyone needs to read or watch something about this tragedy. You will stop complaining about your daily discomforts.
