  1. Is your tachometer Veglia? If it is, the "dancing" pointer is due to a "leaking" ground inside the instrument. I have recently purchased a Moto Guzzi equipped with a Veglia affected with the same problem, and I got it fixed by a specialist in Germany. The grounding issue is very well known and easy to cure. However, opening the instrument without damaging it requires some special skills and tools. I sent both the instruments, so the pointers could be painted again, and more visible. Unfortunately, shipping from the USA is extremely expensive. I paid 234 USD to Germany, while the shipping in the opposite direction is 50 EUR for 5kg. But I spare nothing when it comes to making my Guzzi bellisime! (Belissima = singular). Before: After:

  2. New quality relays is always a good idea. Also, make sure the bases where they plug into are clean and tight. A quality relay with a bad connect doesn't work any better then a cheap relay with a good connection. Back when we would travel on motorcycles we would always carry a spare set of relays for the wife's V11. We only needed them a couple times, but when you need them you need them, and you aren't going to find them in the middle of Pennsyltucky. A classic sign that the relay was not working was also the lack of a tail light as I recall. We did run into situations were the relay would stick and only work some of the time. The clues that the relay was not working were a weak headlight (because the real headlight would not work, only the running light worked), the tach would act up, and the taillight would not work.

  3. Acosta is surely showing signs of being an exceptionally fast learner...he's got guts as well for such a young racer. I think Marquez sees himself in Acosta and enjoyed the battle out there. Like watching Federer vs. Nadal go at each other with their best stuff. Seeing Marquez go down all by himself, not even in a bump and grind situation was surprising indeed...I didn't really see an "error", but if mechanically something happened, he seemed to accept it. Either way, the Ducati was performing well enough for him to battle from 5th to 1st and ride to his limits, which was great to see again. Vinales was on another level altogether...but as said above, can be hot or cold, so very difficult to bet on him being "consistent" again at the remaining races. Either way, Moto GP just became exciting again...it was missing this last year.

  4. These are what you use on FI hoses. Norma cobra clips. Compact, easy to install, easy to remove, re useable, stainless steel, bullet proof sealing, colour banded for size identification. They sell a special tool to install them but it's not required in reality although I made up one using an old worn out pair of combination pliers for convenience sake. Purple banded size is what you need on 5/16 FI hose. I've been using them for many years and they work perfectly and look compact, professional and tidy.   8. well it may or may not be pertinent to your troubles, but i had dreadful fuel consumption once that i eventually realised was due to a nasty crack in the exhaust near the lambda sensor (crossover area). So maybe check that whilst you’re scanning about?

  9. I've been avoiding this thread, as I couldn't watch the GP until last night. OH BOY! fantastic race, so enjoyed it, and in Texas too! The USA needed a good showing, what a track. My man Brad Binder did not fair well, but BatMav and Pedro kept me cheering just the same. It was such a good race, so many passes, I didn't even care who won. I also follow SX and my fave, Cooper Webb won so it was a great weekend of racing for me. I also follow MMA, but my fave Justin Gaethje did not fair so well.

  10. Your right, it is specifically the brake light function of the tail light that doesn't work when that relay is not relaying. Thanks for the correction. I was following the wife through Pennsyltuckey and was impressed that she was never hitting the brakes. Turns out her relay was not relaying. It is possible you have an R/R issue, but I suggest you make sure it is not one of the more common issues that plague the V11 Sport first before shelling out the coins for a new R/R.

  11. Nope docc tool not required and re-useable. You can release them with a very small bladed straight screw driver and to secure them you can use a pair of side cutters or pincher pliers even multi grips if you have plenty of room. Thats how I did them for years until one day I was about to throw away an old pair of combo pliers and thought I wonder if I can re purpose these into a Cobra clip tool.   12. Not much experience with Li-Ion batterys, but there was an EXIDE ELTX14H 48wh 240A installed in my 1100 Sport ( yellow). She was parked sep 7, chlutch gone. When parked it had 13.52V. Had the battery in now to check everything is working, no smoke. Not a lot of use, but holds 13.50V now = 7months . AMAZING i think. Cheers Tom.

  13. @docc I was wrong in saying that. I believe the relays that were just delivered are all 24v wlWhen comparing my original order from digikey that I bought last month and the order that showed up today they are not the same relay The first set of relays I was sent 12VDC1.2R But the new relays are marked as 2VDC1.2R

  17. @p6x the veglia failed years ago and dad replaced with with an Equus. This Amazon link appears to be the same tach. Equus 8068 3-3/8" Tachometer (DIS), White with Aluminum Bezel https://a.co/d/6TEqrOT @docc my new relays from have arrived by digikey but it appears they sent the wrong ones. The last oder I received said 11v CIT RELAY at the bottom where as these say 07v and they are blowing my 10a ignition switch fuse every time I turn the bike on. Looks like I'm going to ha w to let the problem set for a few days while I wait for new relays again.

  18. Lesson learned, I hope. Never use worm gear clamps on the high pressure side of fuel injection. Hope once that is sorted things go smooth.

  20. By the "Lead Issue' do you mean the odd behavior you got when unplugging one sparkplug lead and then the other? I am not sure what that test was meant to show. I would have expected it to run on either cylinder, although poorly. It does seem to indicate that one cylinder runs worse then the other as one cylinder kept running with the other one off while the other one did not. I have not done that sort of test on purpose, but I have accidentally made a twin run on just one cylinder. I did not learn anything from that, however. With your fuel mileage as poor as it is I would expect you can smell fuel, it is using near twice as much fuel to run as it should. Honestly, that could be a real problem as that much fuel going through the motor could wash oil off the cylinder walls.

  22. I have had that sort of conversation about vintage guitars; I play all my guitars, including those that could be considered collectible. I own one special guitar from Andy Timmons, his first signature model, which was produced in very limited number from Japan. It is not even vintage, it was made in 1999. But there is one collector who has been nagging me to sell it to him. His argument being, he has all Andy Timmons latest signature guitars, only this one is missing. He does not want to play it, just want it to complete is collection. I think guitars should be played, and motorcycles should be ridden. A bit of a shame to own something that may present an interest to others, and keep it close to your chest. I like that one of the rare Daytona RS is in display in Texas, https://www.texasvintagemotorcyclemuseum.com/ It belongs to Mike Haven of Houston MGcycles. He hinted that with the right amount, he could be persuaded to part from it, but against my own belief that motorcycles should be used, I agree that this one of a kind should continue to look pretty in red.

  27. @p6x That was some interesting action. Up to about $3500, there was one guy driving the train. He has an old V7Sport and a MHR, so I thought he wanted another Italian gem. His past wins showed he had some deep pockets, but he left the dance. Then the eventual buyer took over. It's history now. Makes me want to put mine in my foyer even more to keep it perfect, but I've been told more than once, no way! I have the perfect spot for it. Some people just dont understand.

I think Pedro Acosta is on another level, given that this is only his third MotoGP... when you compare with Jack Miller and Brand Binder... I don't want to diminish Maverick Viñales' performance, but both Portimao and COTA are tracks that Maverick loves.

  29. They were pretty pricy. I know the models like the Scura, Rosso Mandello and the Tenni ranged from $13,500 to $15,000. In 02.. The standards were around $10k. Pricy for the early 2000s when a Yamaha R1 at the time was around $9-$10k. I remember wanting a Tenni in my 20s. Found a used one in a shop in Jersey.....In 06....For $12k.   31. Docc- based off pass posts I read on here concerning relays I ordered a 10 pack of CIT A11CSQ24VDC1.2D from digikey and they are supposed to arrive tomorrow. I had replaced them all before however this was when the bad battery was still in the bike. I had assumed that running new relays on the battery that didn't hold a charge had damaged them and since they are pretty inexpensive I just went ahead and ordered new relays last week. EDIT/correction: correct relay: CIT A11CSQ12VDC1.5R

  34. Actually, the issue with Marquez (and others) has to do with the brake pads, which are pushed away from the rotors. Since Michele Pirro's accident in 2018 at the Mugello due to this issue, they have installed a brake fluid metering valve, which in theory should mitigate the effect. Marc had to pump the brakes. This issue combined with bad habits are hard to break, he returned to Honda mode while heading the GP, that explains the crash. I am betting that Pedro Acosta will win at Jerez! he is absolutely phenomenal! I was listening to the GP review, and his nickname is "sponge Bob"; everything he is being taught, he is able to put into good use immediately, without the need for adaptation. Also, this race should dampen the pleas for removing aerodynamic appendixes, because they impede racers to overtake. We have seen that it is not the case.

  36. From a broad perspective, it’s arguably the most common issue with any old Italian motorcycle, the electrical system. Years ago I just determined that I’d go through the electrics and do the handful of usually affordable and not-to-tricky upgrades on the front end, and life has been easier ever since, with all my beloved Italians. I’ve not done much with fuse blocks, though docc and many others have a lot of insight there. Mine have always looked great, so I haven’t messed with that. But checking for good grounding (can be a “free” fix for a lot of issues), the mosfet VR retrofit, new & good relays, and at least checking if not also just pro-actively upgrading the wire connectors is time/money well spent for longer term peace of mind. I’ve purchased a number of mosfet upgrades from roadstercycle, which were quite a bit more expensive, but he specs out some good (or great) quality connectors and wiring, which is handy.

  37. Before you do that, make sure the headlight is working. In the headlight there are two bulbs, one standard low beam / high beam headlight bulb and one running light bulb. It is easy to mistake the running light bulb being on for the headlight working. If the headlight bulb isn't working the regulator won't properly charge the battery. Because it uses the voltage on the headlight circuit after the headlight bulb to measure battery voltage. The bulb can be burnt out or the circuit might be off (blown fuse or faulty relay). You may need a new regulator, but make sure before going that way.

  38. @GuzziMoto Indeed! I really thought Pedro Acosta was going to win his first MotoGP before Maverick Viñales came back out of the blue! He has just demonstrated that he was worthy of all the anticipation. He is now fourth in the World Championship classification, within a few points of the two in front of him. As incredible as it may seem, and I know it is too early, but I am thinking he may have a shot at winning too. Jorge Martin had nothing on him when they fought it out. I am not completely convinced about Maverick Viñales keeping it up but pole+sprint+race= Incredible!!! Enea Bastianini is back, and Francesco Bagnaia is apparently experiencing the chattering that Jorge Martin dealt reported.

  43. Well, ok.. I'll photobomb you.. We were in the path of totality, so had a cookout/eclipse party. My last apprentice, Austin..now the Indiana MGNOC rep, took these pix. As we approached totality, I went to the house and got my birding binoculars. It "appeared" that we could see eruptions around the corona. The temp dropped 12 degrees, colors changed, and the breeze we had been having dropped to dead calm. Crickets cricketed. I thought, "I wonder what it would look like from the air?" Quickly opened the hanger door, did a preflight, grabbed my flying jacket, silk scarf, and aviator cap, kicked the tires and lit the fires. The spring greens were a different shade, and it looked like a wall of rain 2 miles to the west. The above picture is looking west. When we got there, though, it still looked like rain ahead. Not a ripple in the air. Awesome. You can see some of the effect in this picture taxiing in. Shadows appeared to be cut out of cardboard, and the colors were still "off.: Truly a once in a lifetime experience.. it was good for me.

  44. Odd as it may sound, I like that the tires fade. I think that can make for better racing. Racers have to use their tires as a limited resource. Use them up too much early on and they may not have enough later in the race. In fact, limiting tires could be a better way to slow down MotoGP bikes then reducing engine capacity (which has already been shown to NOT be a good way to slow them down).
